I think it’s I gotta have it now, but I won’t have the money to pay it off until 6 weeks from now.

I know that's the reasoning, but I think it's a bad way to think about one's personal finances, and it encourages terrible financial habits. Not that it's Apple's job to fix that as opposed to exploit it, but I can't drum up much enthusiasm for features like this.

I don’t think so. Seems like incompetence since there’s a technical issue - just like with the launch of iOS 16.

I've been a professional programmer for decades, yet I can't convince non-programmers that programmers are not the ones calling the shots.

Don’t remember any other iOS launch not allowing people to activate their phones.
An iOS update doesn’t require devices to be re-activated. You might be thinking of the iPhone 14 launch, which, like every other iPhone launch since the first iPhone, had reports of activation issues as the servers get hit with millions of people in a matter of a few hours.

The programmers don't get to decide how often new releases come out and there's only so much you can do within a specified timeframe. Timeframe being too short = rushing and delays.

So Apple is going to enable and facilitate America’s ever growing love of debt?

I wish they’d focus on fixing their software instead.
Only things that are certain for living in America is debt and taxes.

Overall it’s a nice standard of living, given that you are healthy and working to a later retirement 💪🏻

Ruh-roh, you got a dislike from a contributor
🤣
You're not allowed to bring truth to the RDF o_O

It's not just America, it's consumers everywhere. It's the next step in, "you'll own nothing, eat ze bugs, and be happy."

Unless you absolutely need something in a real health, educational or occupational emergency, financing is just a way to decrease marginal cash flow.

Sun Tsu says the best way to kill an enemy is by another enemy's hands, but this type of financing is even better. It kills consumers by their own hands.

If this is going to be delayed that long, you might as well delay it until iOS 17. Apple will be missing out on the holiday shopping spree.

Hot take: Apple employees all need to be back in the office. Working from home has proven to be a nightmare when it comes to quality software being released.

I fail to see the competitive edge for a pay later program that lasts only six weeks. I could get my Apple Watch Ultra from Best Buy and have 24 months to pay if I want.
The underwriting is likely not as strict as traditional store financing.

I think the competitive edge isn't so much "payment type A v. type B", instead it's offering additional options to make it even easier for potential customers to make the purchase.

Unfortunately, I think this is aimed at people who can't qualify for longer financing terms. So they're being tempted with the idea that they can go ahead and get an expensive Apple product now, and then pay for it later, but since "later" is just a few weeks away, all this is really doing is preying on people with credit issues.

While BNPL can be a slippery slope, I don't think this is "preying on people"... it's not like customers are being forced into this payment option.
