The fact that one person equated piecing together IKEA knock-down furniture with repairing a smartphone, clearly demonstrates that at least one person should not attempt to repair a smartphone.

Have you tried it?

People in this thread act like replacing a battery or screen is some herculean feat. Truth is that you don't need to be an electrical engineer to look up a battery replacement guide online.

Heck, there's even an official guide. Tim will even rent you the tools and sell you genuine parts.

I don’t know, can the average person do an oil exchange on their ICE vehicle, yes, sorta kinda but how many WANT to do that/choose to do that?
I can see the appeal, but does really every single phone model have to be this way? No imho, should there be models that support this? Absolutely.

Yeah, I'm probably not average in that I do change my own oil, plugs, air filter, starter, brakes (pads, rotors, fluid, lines, even calipers if they are needed) power steering fluid, trans and diff fluids, battery, etc... But, major service, like a clutch, or front and/or rear main seals? As much as I hate paying the inflated parts prices and labor, those jobs are above my toolset and pay grade (at least on my current car - previous cars may have attempted because easier access, less to disassemble then reassemble).

Similarly, there's jobs with my tech items I don't mind doing and even enjoy doing (ram, ssd, even some power supplies..) in some desktops and laptops.. but, man, ever since the iPods, I'm ok shipping off a portable device for a battery swap or any real major service. (have done a few battery swaps in a few iPods, and a few iPhones, never managed to break anything, but pegged my anxiety and blood pressure the whole time each time, wasn't fun..)

It'd be great to have more options? Ultra thin and light and somewhat waterproof, ultra rugged and extremely waterproof, and easily serviceable, battery swappable w/o tools, and about as water-resistant as an iPhone 3gs, without a case and about as waterproof as the rugged model with a quality case? If each could offer an equal range of options in regard to cameras and storage, that'd be even better?

That's all I want? Choice, options.

Shrug.
