I got my mom the first Ipad Air (2013, 2014?) and its doing ok for her uses such as web browsing, email. However it is noticeably slower now compared to years ago or even current tech. Might spring for something newer for her soon with this ipad not getting updates anymore.

A 9th gen iPad would probably be a solid upgrade for her if you can swing it, especially with them getting cleared out. It wouldn't require her to re-learn how to use it since it's still got a home button.

42% trade-in? 😳 I didn't expect bo the that hight?
I sold my last iPhone for like 200€ online after a few days when Apple trade-in was offering me 50€...

Costumer are dumper than I was expecting...
“Costumer are dumper than I was expecting...”

Guess so :)

No, actually I think people make reasonable decisions based on a number of factors, convenience being one of them when it comes to trade-in.

But, keep talking about “costumers” being “dump”.

My 1st gen IPPs 12.9s are now a picture frame and two portable TVs (plex/YouTube/netflix/disney/amazon).

They'll last forever, or at least until video support drops off.

apple pressing the "throttle old iphones" button after releasing the new iphones

never experienced this on an ipad. my 2014 ipad air 2 still works wonders unlike my slow AF iphone 6S from 2015.

I have a 2018 iPad Pro that I bought as a refurb directly from Apple in 2020. I bought the M4 iPad Pro yesterday. Let's just say that it will be returned in the next two weeks. Speakers sound better on the 2018 Pro. I watched 4K HDR videos on YouTube side by side and the M4 iPad Pro looks what, 10% better and brighter? The blacks are more black but picture wise the 2018 holds up. The M4 has faster WIFI download speeds, but barely in real use. I thought it would be SIGNIFICANTLY lighter, but it's not.

I don't see how with current iPadOS how it's worth it, even if I use edu discount with Apple for $899 and get $235 credit from trade in. I will keep my 2018 for at least another year and see what next year brings.

They're repurposed and held onto because they're not a necessary device and have limited functionality. I don't interpret this in a good way for the iPad.

My son’s iPad is nearly two years older than him, and he’ll be 8 in a few months. It’s a 2014 iPad Air that was originally mine, and then my grandma’s, and then back to him a couple years ago. I’ve been researching replacing his iPad lately. Not sure if I should wait until autumn. It’s crazy how okayish a lot of 3D games still run on it, lol.

I still have my iPad Mini 2 from 2013, which my son used before the Air 2. I 3D printed a stand for it and use it as a display for my Tempest weather station on my desk.

I think this is pretty interesting overall. I’m still using my M1 12.9 inch iPad Pro, and I thought about getting the 13 inch, but there really isn’t much noticeable improvement to it for what I do. Meanwhile, I always buy the new iPhone every year. I guess it’s just a different upgrade cycle.

Thats what i usually end up doing with mine. Gave my air 4 to my sister (recycled her 1st gen pro) and recently got a air 6 for my nephew (hes decided to hand down his air 3 to a family members kid).

Im already thinking of giving myself the air 6 as a Xmas present and handing my air 5 to my bestie.

Its a consumption device for most people and iPad OS doesn't encourage heavy work.

Meaning 2018 iPads are just as capable as the M4 ones for 90% of iPad tasks.

Hence no need to upgrade

Which is why Apple is forcing people to buy new iPads by locking out old accessories, and only allowing the new pencil and keyboard to work exclusively with the new iPads

I’ve had every iPhone since iPhone 3G. But only 3 iPad’s. iPad OG, iPad mini OG, and my current iPad Air 2020, which still runs smoothly.

I have a Pro 2020 iPad. While I'd like to have the OLED display, I have an OLED TV at home. My iPad still handles Lightroom just fine. Since it's a consumption device with a lightweight OS, I don't see it significantly slowing down.

As someone with OLED TVs, a 2018 iPad Pro, and a M4 iPad Pro (that I will return), it's not worth it. Side by side the 2018 and M4 look almost identical. Just the bottom/top bars have an inkier black because of the aspect ratio. Brightness is almost the same. I would rather watch content on my LG OLED.

The same logic holds for phones, but people race to update their phones so TikTok can load 1ms faster or whatever.

I’m always baffled by the inconsistency in purchasing logic between phones and tablets. Realistically, anybody who has bought a phone in the last 4 years doesn’t *need* a new one.

Perhaps people will be more reticent towards repurposing after the recent photo resurrection ‘bug’ debacle.

Carrier influences plays a bigger role with phones. ’Your 2yrs are up, you’re eligible to upgrade. Get the new iPhone for *insert discount*

Heck there’s even an upgrade program for iPhones via Apple. Not so much for the iPad

Most people buy or get given a WiFi iPad and call it a day

I’m surprised anyone is citing trade in values. The trade in values are an absolute joke, and the trade in itself is a huge risky hassle. Never doing that to myself again.

Besides, best way to get Android using family members off Android is to give them a perfectly good iPhone. Even one that’s a few years old is as good as any budget Android phone.

That’s because there’s no plan for trade ins, the majority of the time. They do it but it’s 50% less than market value.

I think most people only use their iPad for consumption. It's almost impossible to do any real work on it. For me, everything takes 3 times longer to do than my Mac. So if my 6 year old iPad still plays YouTube then why buy a new one.
What you really mean to say is that it's almost impossible to do any real Mac work on it.

People do real work with the iPad all the time. It's just work tailored for the iPad.

If you need to haul farm equipment, a car will not do.

But that doesn't mean a taxi is not used for "real" work.

Meanwhile, in other news of the obvious, water remains wet, and consumers say that they'd like to have more money.
