hah been using my iPhone SE 2016 naked since Day 1. Just has daily scuffs on the frame and back, otherwise still perfect; no marks or etches on the display either. However, I have put a few scratches on my beloved iPad mini 5 display. They're hardly noticeable at a glance, but they show up when viewed from certain angles. It's also naked with some scuffs brewing on the tiny edges and the back. Cases be dammed.

It's a beautiful device and should be shown that way as the artists intended. Do you cover all the beautiful things in life? Car? SO? TV?

I also think cases preclude us to being careless and compound carelessness. Case makers make you believe you aren't worthy of carrying the device alone and that you are irresponsible. You give them the power to control you and your wallet. I disagree. It's all just marketing. You are better than that.

I also believe the poor design of the iPhone 6-11 made matters worse with rounded edges. The squared edges of iPhone 4-SE provide a more solid grip surface, to which the iPhone 12 returns. I did find my iPhone 6 difficult to grasp, which is a major reason why I traded it in for the iPhone SE (and paid full cash to unlock it).

Don't let case makers lie to you. 🙂 You're better than they want you to believe. (Don't let anyone lie to you, for that matter...)
I have destroyed many devices in my lifetime due to carelessness or accidents. I have cracked several phone screens which rendered them completely unusable until fixed for a hefty price.

There are some people like my dad whose devices somehow remain pristine after years of use. I am not one of those people.

I need a case.

Bringing this back from the dead. Sorry I’m late.

Titainium would be a bad choice other than for weight savings. It’s technically stronger than Stainless, but as others have pointed out, scratches much easier. Most watch enthusiasts hate titainium watches and prefer stainless. (Just ask the Rolex guys). I too prefer the stainless watch over the titanium and don’t mind the heft.

Now a ceramic Apple phone edition 😍

In short order, after posting this, I had a "crap, I brought this on myself" moment this weekend. Riding my bike, got too slow and mixed up, off balance, and yep I went tumbling over (clipless pedals). I just knew my iPhone SE was toast (in my jersey pocket). As I got up off the ground, I mostly forgot it was in there (more interested in the road rash I obtained on my knee and mostly curious about any other parts I may have damaged). Sure enough, the SE slipped out as I stood up, ... SPLAT it went face down, mostly onto hardpacked dirt, but the bottom third of it landed on the asphalt. It even made a "smack" sound like a hard hit. I told my daughter who was with me, "yep, that did it. Crap."

Picked it up, ....it miraculously survived ALL of that madness. I fell with the bike and packed myself into a ball to attempt a roll as best I could despite my leg being pegged under the bike (no I didn't really "roll" but rather tried to stay compact). Somehow it survived without an additional scratch or hairline crack anywhere.

Maybe it's the steel structure around the phone with the way it's designed... there's zero excuse why it survived. Something about that build controlled the shock absorbency. Hmm, maybe I should wrap it in something when I go on bike rides.... 🤔

I agree with everything you say, but with the job I have and having 2 children under 10, having a case give me comfort, in knowing that my device is protected during a drop. I refuse to carry around a $1k device with scratches and dents. I’m currently using a back and front glass protector, along with a bumper and the combo works for me.

What about using Liquidmetal (bulk metallic glass)? After all, Apple did purchase the perpetual licensing for the use of the technology and it has been long enough for them to get their manufacturing ready for mass production. The benefits of the technology, for both consumer and Apple, seem like a good match for something like the iPhone .
