The reviews I've seen haven't been good, but they haven't exactly been "scathing" either.

My comment was based on an article at movies.yahoo.com. When I posted, the word used there was "scathing". They have changed the article so that it now uses the word "appalled".

From movies.yahoo.com-"Critics were generally appalled by the movie, though industry observers say bad reviews generally mean nothing to parents looking to keep their children quiet for a few hours."

I just checked on the unofficial box office results for the weekend. Chicken Little was #1 with about $40.1 million in sales, well ahead of the anticipated $30 million. This was despite what were said to be "scathing reviews". We'll see how the next couple (several) weeks go, as it was mentioned in the article that the success of this movie would influence the Disney/Pixar talks.
Any cute Disney movie is going to have a huge built-in audience, namely every kid age 3-13 and the parents who will take them no matter how bad the film is, often taking them multiple times to kill a few hours. And AFAIK, it has no competition at the moment, either from other animated films, or really from any film. We seem to be in a bit of a dry spell for movies right now.
