So they displayed features that were fictitious in order to sell iPhones? Isn't that... fraud?

The class action lawsuits are writing themselves checks...

Its meh, I have a high end Android and my 16 pro max is chilling in a drawer. Just because Apple no longer makes the best phones or mobile OS doesn't mean I'll stop using my Macs. Never ever. But say that first part around here and people attack you.
If you’re happy with your devices, then that’s great. Personally I hate Android, and would be devastated if forced to switch. My wife has a Pixel, and that’s fine, since I don’t need to use it, nor does she need to use my iPhone. Our choice of phones works well for us.

There is a subjective aspect to “best.” The spec sheet only tells half the story, the other half is subjective. An iPhone is still the superior option for me, because it means I don’t have to use Android, which irritates the heck out of me, and does everything I want it to, easily and without fuss.

Um. It is indeed exhausting.

But I don’t necessarily want SIRI to be turned into a chatbot, although that does sound fun. I would just like it to consistently do the things that I ask correctly. Lately she has taken to saying she doesn’t know where I am when I ask the weather. As I have not moved in over 30 years and have used the same phrasing when asking about the temperature, I don’t know why sometimes it works, and sometimes it doesn’t. I don’t know why Apple had that very helpful feature of letting its voice assistant search my photos and suddenly it doesn’t. I don’t know why it was able to add a notation to a certain note in the Notes app and then suddenly it couldn’t. Over the years this type of thing gets to be very frustrating and it frustrates on every Apple device so that multiplies the frustrations. And my needs for Siri are, I’m sure, relatively small and consistent. I’m home most of the time, but those who are out in the world in a job probably have greater needs, and the frustration would be even greater. I hold Apple totally accountable for this because I feel that if it were a feature, that would bring them in more money they would have fixed it by now. And though I don’t rant in an angry fashion, I do question why John G was not removed from his charge long ago. And I’m aware that for a while Siri was under Craig Federighi‘s charge and still, it made no progress. I’m very interested in intelligent Apple devices, especially as I age in place. I am anxious to see some progress, not excuses.
I have no argument, you clearly have an opinion grounded in experience.

I mean he is not wrong…

He was right. It does not. It mimicks value, that's the point, I think.

ChatGPT has completely changed the way I work for the better. Saves me significant time almost every day. It absolutely adds value for a whole lot of people.

Now whether or not Siri not being ChatGPT is a problem for Apple is a different question. I tend to think “no” in the short term, but I think it is a very worrying sign that the head of Siri dismissed it out of hand, because here we are a few years later and ChatGPT is a significantly better Siri than Siri is.

It ads value for me. Google search sucks. ChatGPT is much better for general knowledge questions. Apple shouldn’t be in this business. Just be the platform that provides the frameworks/API’s for other companies who are good at this and let consumers choose who they want to use.

Exactly this. This is why I don’t even bother wasting time watching “keynotes” (they are not - keynote is a live opening speech to a gathering).

Use one of the actually capable AIs to summarize the contents without wasting an hour watching Apple SVPs pat themselves on the back.
That’s the fun of the keynotes. Never get tired of it.

Google answers general knowledge questions with SEO spam. ChatGPT answers general knowledge questions with something that is “likely” to be the right answer. Both is not really what you want.
Nothing’s ever going to be 100%. I use Copilot at work (ChatGPT access isn’t allowed). I don’t know how it is for general knowledge but for application specific questions it’s quite good.

In addition to Apple's deeply ingrained stance on privacy, conflicting personalities within Apple contributed to the problems. More than half a dozen former employees who worked in Apple's AI and machine-learning group told The Information that poor leadership is to blame for its problems with execution, citing an overly relaxed culture, as well as a lack of ambition and appetite for taking risks when designing future versions of Siri.

This has been obvious for a long time at Apple. As long as Wall Street is happy with the numbers nothing else matters.

Actually Siri has sucked since the beginning, 2011. Eleven years before Chat GPT debut.
Well, I dunno, it seemed fine to me at the beginning. I could easily set timers, alarms, GPS directions, reminders etc with my voice, which wasn't exactly cutting-edge but it was useful. It started sucking more and more as competitors started doing more impressive things, and Apple wasn't keeping up.

I recommend participants in this thread read the article Bubble Trouble up now on The American Prospect site. It delves into the question that dare not be spoken in the tech industry today: what if there is nothing there in the current "AI" boom?

What should be obvious for a long time are lots of happy customers bring lots of cash to apples coffers, and this makes Wall Street happy. So what matters to those who may not understand, it starts with customer satisfaction.

or that the growth peaked a few years ago and none of the current leadership have a clue where to go next as the AI fiasco proves.

What has changed, your professional side or your personal side? Or both?
Genuinely interested, I’m retired and see no use cases for me for genAI

That’s neither here nor there. Don’t move the goalposts. To keep Wall Street happy requires keeping customers happy.

Apple does that in spades. You can be part of the minority of MR crowd that disagrees and that’s fine. But Apple over the last 14 years have generally come out on top.

How is it neither here nor there? The thread is about Apple's bungled AI rollout.

Actually the thread is about a report that claims a window into what has to be for eyes only information. That doesn’t negate that in the last 14 years, apple has come out on top in various surveys and metrics.

You can ignore it and that’s fine, but it doesn’t change anything.

Apple is currently experiencing a significant decline in its software quality. The recent issues with the iPhone 15 Pro, including overheating, are unacceptable and should not have been released to the market. As a long-time Apple user, I have never considered switching to Android until this year. The company’s focus has shifted from delivering high-quality products to prioritizing extravagant features, that they can't deliver, which is concerning.

I actually have a Pixel 9 Pro coming tomorrow and have been de-Apple’ing my life for about a week now from Macs, iPads, ATV, etc. It’s hard but Google Gemini looks so good (don’t care about chat bots) and having been in the ecosystem for 15yrs and upgrading ever year on about every device I’m bored of the Apple repetitiveness. Apple used to take forever with software but when they did something it was better than the competitors…hasn’t been that way for years now. Apple hardware was always top notch but others have caught up as well.

Only issue I see with the Pixel Pro is some potential stuttering while scrolling and the fact my spouse might be upset cause I switched even though with RCS she may never notice if it wasn’t for the colored bubble. Guess we’ll see!
I guess the best way to send a message to Apple is through your wallet. Good luck with the transitions. I personally like my iPhone an other apple devices, so I’m not moving anywhere because for me it’s the best option out there.

But good luck.

It's technology, miss the boat on the next thing and it doesn't matter how well regarded you used to be.

This. Less bad /= Good. Put a reliability score on it (with a link to an explanation) if you want me to trust your result.
