Most recent report statistics might be of some interest:

As a moderator, I had to respond to a lot of problematic posts and the people behind them. Temporary bans were interesting. On the IRC channel, we had the usual fun with floods. 😆

Is there still an IRC channel?

Yes - but I'm never sure if anything comes of it.

I'm hopeful that occasionally a moderator shoots a PM to a given user and reminds them to have some courtesy and don't just post negative crap in replies, even if a post isn't moderated/removed. (hard to know)

This forum allows a bit too much dogging on posts, topic concepts, against the grain opinions (re: Apple mainly).

I'm all for conversation, but just derailing stuff and taking shots activity ruins community (for those seeking good dialogue).

I’m apparently a target for reporting. I never realized so many were so sensitive. Not only that, there is no consideration - just an outright deletion of my post. No defending it.

It's not about posters being sensitive or not. It's just easier to stick to the topic and post in a respectful manner, even if you disagree with the subject matter. You've been around here for a long time. The lay of the land should be quite clear.

If you slip up (as many do sometimes) and get a gentle mod reminder nudge about posting off topic or whatever may be the case, take heed and do your best to stay within the rules and you should be fine.

There is a mechanism in place for you to defend yourself. If you think you were unfairly moderated, send in a note to the admins using the Contact Us link:

One of the site administrators will review your note and reply to you.

We always consider whether or not a reported post actually contains a violation. So the claim that "there is no consideration - just an outright deletion" is false.

A user is never moderated simply because other users report him or her. Sometimes posts that are perfectly fine get reported, either because the reporter genuinely thinks there might be a violation, or - in some cases - because the reporter is angry or disagrees with the post, even when there's no violation. In those cases, we reject the report.

So users don't need to worry about being a target for reports. If posts adhere to the rules, they won't be moderated. And if a user feels we've made a mistake, s/he can contact us via the Contact Us and discuss with us. When we see we've made a mistake, we reverse the moderation. We're careful, so it doesn't happen often, but we're human so mistakes happen.

And it's worthwhile pointing out that we truly appreciate reports, even when you're not sure whether or not there's a violation. Reports don't waste our time as long as they're meant to be helpful.

Yes, I occasionally have reported posts, not many, but yeah, a few. A as a rule of thumb, I report on two different scenarios: 1) Disrespectful content (with insults, name calling, or just violent tone), but not necessarily offensive content because many times this depends on the listener; and 2) if for whatever reason (X) a mod has deleted me a message, I will keep an eye for any other messages with this X factor to report it, because I cannot stand being moderated and seeing other people doing the same and not being moderated. An example of this, is when back in 2014 or 2015 a MR mod deleted a funny comment I made on a piece of news, because it was just a gif. Ever since then, I was several months reporting those comments with just a gif, a picture or one word, because I truly and deeply believe that rules have to be applied equally to everyone (even contributors or mods or even staff). It’s what I’ve been teached is the fair thing, and I’m an idealist (and a rebel, and a misfit). I consider we’re all the same: users, people.

That being said, I can understand that moderating such a huge forum is a very difficult task, as well as trying to be as objective as possible (because we’re humans, not bots), so all my recognition for their work.
