yes an apple remote. and you can link a remote to a computer by holding menu and play but after you do that can you undo it and move it to a different computer?

When it's paired, it means that computer won't take commands from any other remote. But, the remote will continue to work with other devices.

To unpair the remote (and allow the computer/device to take commands from any remote), go to System Preferences > Security and click on "Unpair".
