If the kids can't behave in the forum, perhaps it should be removed altogether or changed so it doesn't include console games. There are plenty of other gaming sites to cater to the juvies.

Not all poster in the gaming section are kids and there are a lot of reasonable people in the gaming section...there is A LOT more arguments in other sections of MR and the gaming section is a small ant here....should MR be removed because people around the world have different point of view....no thats too harsh to be considered a option.

The gaming section is for ALL gaming and this section is not that bad that removal should be considered.

Note: Stop with the "kids" because there are adults in there as well.

Even though I don't spend a ton of time in the Games forum I think the idea of separate sub-forums for each console to be a waste and most likely ineffective. Out of all the current threads in there only a small handful could be considered problematic. Some posters in that forum just need to chill out and possibly choose to ignore a post they may not agree with instead of flaming that post and dragging the entire thread OT.

As GFLPraxis mentioned some peeps have got their panties in a wad 'cause the PS3 and Wii are coming out and once said peeps have their console in hand they'll spend more playing games and less time arguing on the internet so all will go back to normal.

The problem in the gaming forum is that there are a few people ruining things for everyone by treating every criticism of a console as a personal attack. I'm an avid gamer who would love to talk about games with other Mac users, but I dont even bother with the gaming forums here because I dont like getting insulted when I post my opinions.

I personally like the idea of separating the gaming forum, though I wonder if a genre approach would be better than a console approach, since many of us have more than one console. Unfortunately, I don't think that splitting the forum will do anything to alleviate the problem, it may just give them more cause to go and troll the "other side's" forum.

Looking at history, there were massive PS3 v XBox 360 debates prior to XBox 360 launch, and I haven't seen anywhere near as many since the 360 came out since all the 360 users are actually playing the system and not involved in the anticipation threads. DS vs PSP threads died down after the first few months. I predict after the PS3 and Wii launch die down people will shut up and play the systems and you won't see flame wars except in "Which should I buy?" threads.

The problem in the gaming forum is that there are a few people ruining things for everyone by treating every criticism of a console as a personal attack.
Yup, and there's the darn fanboy label. There are certain assumptions that go with certain labels.

Anyone who defends Nintendo for example, gets the Nintendo Fanboy label. Nintendo Fanboys are assumed to hate Sony and the Playstation, and assumed to not mind the XBox 360 (the whole Wii60 thing). Thus, mentioning Nintendo in a Sony thread means people automatically assume you hate Sony, even if you like both systems and are just discussing both systems. Same with mentioning Microsoft. However, mentioning Nintendo in a Microsoft thread isn't so bad because of the Wii60 thing. Mentioning Sony in a Microsoft thread will probably start a flame war.

The age limit for the games forum should be raised to 25. That should cut down on all the senseless posts, but judging by the other forums, this may not solve the problem. :)

What we need are more moderators for the Game forum. You know, as long as personal attacks and obvious trolling are dealt with swiftly, there shouldn't be any need for more forums.

This has also been discussed ad naseum. It's not more moderators needed but more members willing to report posts quickly. Click on the triangular-shaped icon with the exclamation point in the centre.

The moderators do a fine job when they know about the problem. So many times, I used to see a squabble between two people that had been happening for hours but no one reported it.

well why not like a week freeze, let heads cool off.

That had been done with the political forum for a while and it helped.

making subforums for every system would just be stupid, as would banning of talk of consoles.

Especially with more and more games coming cross platform it would just not be intelligent because you could theoretically have 4 threads on the exact same game.

Hell while we are at it why don't we split the political forums into, religion, politics (with further subforums for democrats and republicas) and social issues

how about just mac gaming, console game and other...

I thought the Games forum was to talk specifically about Mac gaming software, since it is under the Mac Software main category. If the kids can't behave in the forum, perhaps it should be removed altogether or changed so it doesn't include console games. There are plenty of other gaming sites to cater to the juvies.

No.. your in over your head.. tons of adults game, and vist the gaming forums, sometime adults who don't game go there to ask about "what system should my X year son" or "what extras do i need for X system?" Also its been send, but i'll say it again because people always look over it.. it says Console and Mac gaming! so its clearly ok for people to talk about any type of Console based gaming or an gaming the runs on Mac hardware(Windows games, Linux games or Mac OS X games)

It's been argued about before, but it depends on how you approach the forum. If you come through the main forum page, it does indeed say 'Console & Mac gaming', but if you come through the site front page, it only says 'Mac gaming'.

Personally, I don't think there is a need for sub-forums, just for people to report posts/threads when they start to get off topic or out of hand.

I was just being picky - it reminded me of this argument a while back. I have no problems at all with discussing console games in that forum. :)

I also feel that the Gaming Forum should not be seperated or frozen. We should help the mods and report anyone who starts a "fanboy" flame war. That way the mods can handle that person as needed.
As GFLPraxis mentioned there are some here that immediately "attack" anytime you mention a system you do not like or a certain system that you do. That is annoying and I've gotten to the point where I just skip over any posts by those who do that....but maybe I could help the mods out by reading them and reporting posts if it is needed. I work in the social services field and do a lot of hiring, firing, supervising, mediating, etc......I tend to find that those who do the most "barking" about issues tend to be those that are also adding fuel to every fire. I certainly do not want the Gaming Forum taken down. I've been playing video games since the early 80's and it's great to be part of a community that I can not only discuss my interest in Apple related stuff but also in video games (and many other things too).

Maybe it needs changing on the home page to just Gaming.
