Needed to change my voicemail greeting due to my father's death. iPhone wouldn't let me. Googled the problem, one recommendation was Reset Network Settings. So that's what I did and it worked. Problem solved.

But then all my voicemail messages were gone, going back a few years, including all the voicemails from my dad.

Is there a way to get them back? Who stores them AT&T or Apple?

PS - tried restoring my phone with an iCloud backup tonight, but the backups available were only two days old and I lost the voicemails over a week ago. So that didn't work.

Usually voicemails that are stored by your phone company are auto-deleted after a while and are resistant to phone changes. I changed phone brands but my voicemails stayed, for example.

So any voicemails that are years old and affected by a phone reset would be (in my opinion) stored on the phone. Do you use visual voicemail or an app from the phone company?

The only way Apple would store them would be part of your backup, as they only seem to store iMessages. And if iCloud doesn't have it then they would be part of your backup on your computer (if you did one).

You can try to see if iCloud has a different backup (I never tried this myself):
  • Go to Settings > General > Reset on your iPhone, then choose the 'Erase All Content And Settings' option.
  • You will be on the Apps & Data screen. Tap 'Restore from iCloud Backup', then log you're your iCloud account.
  • Continue to 'Choose backup,' then choose the iCloud backup you need to view.
  • Wait for the device to finish download the iCloud backup. Once it is complete, you can access and view iCloud backup files.

In any case you should also make a local backup on your computer in case fiddling with iCloud doesn't pan out. And if you manage to get the voicemails back then you should save them for later. Hope this helps.

The voicemails should be stored on AT&T’s server. Try calling your voicemail directly and see if they’re still there.

If they aren’t, then your phone was likely storing a local copy and, unfortunately, if you do not have a backup they might be lost...

Any iTunes backups you made should have voicemails stored with them. You’ll probably have to use a third party tool to access them. That’s how I was able to retrieve voicemails that used to be on my wife's phone from her father after he passed away.

I have reset my network settings on several phones and not experienced this. Just did it today on my 8, just checked all voicemails are there. I'm sorry you lost something so precious, I panicked when I read this thread because I have same type voicemalis from my wife.
