I have a Dual Core 2GHz, 2 Gig Ram MacMini running OS 10.4.1 I can turn my computer in the morning and bring up the desktop but after a short time..1 -3 minutes the Reset/Power Off screen appears in several languages surrounded by a darkened screen and my keyboard and mouse are locked up. the only option is to hold the power button down to reset, and the screen appears faster the second time. I have run diskwarrior and was lucky to get thru it and the fix lasted only a couple of hours. I have tried the Leopard install disk but couldn't even get to utilities to see if I could run them. The reset screen appeared but only the top 1/2 of it, the rest was black with the desktop behind it. The machine is unusable. Can anyone suggest anything?

On Apple Forum someone with a similar problem took his in for repairs and they didn't find anything wrong... I am under warranty and do that, but I live in Costa Rica and it is difficult to do.

What you are experiencing is Kernel crashes (the dark screen in multiple languages).

If you can, launch console and capture the output of /Library/Logs/CrashReporter or just grab the file and post it here. It should be date stamped.

    Kernal Panic problem

I tried starting my system, but after waiting over an hour, it was only working for about 2 minutes. I went to library/logs/ but could not find anything listed like panic.log or crash reporter. I am using Mac OS 10.4.1 I looked under library under my name as logged in, but perhaps there is another library under system I should have tried? I'll have to wait awhile before doing so. My computer is under warranty. I have never opened a MacMini before, but I suppose the next step would be to try to open it and remove the memory to see if this is the problem? The machine was bought as configured (2 gigs ram) from MacMall.

    Yup, wrong Library.

What you want is at the root (top level) of your drive. Open a Finder Window and click your disk drive on the left. Column view is best for this. You will see the following folders:
    Applications
    Library
    System
    Users

What you want is the Library Folder.

    So the path is /Library/Logs/CrashReporter

In there you should see some crash (Panic) logs. Post the latest one.

I was able to open Library/logs/ and found a file panic but before I could move it it locked up on me. I'll try again later tonight, but if it locks up this fast I'll have to take it in for repair. It will only boot once. WHen I try to start it the second time it will not even give me the sound of the hard drive, but after an hour or more it will reboot again. after several hours it might give me several minutes before locking up. Heat seems to be an issue even though the mini doesn't feel warmer than usual.. Perhaps this is indicative of a problem with the memory chips?

    Thank you again ..Kerry

This is definitely sounding like a hardware problem due to heat. You stated you are under warranty. I would call Apple anyway. I don't think this is related to memory, but it's hard to tell without seeing a crash log.

This morning I managed to pull the panic.log to my desktop and one hour later, to put it on a flash drive. There are two parts, Panic.log and Console Messages. Hopefully I've uploaded it correctly. I hope this will help.

When you got this Mac, did you migrate from a PPC mac?

You have a lot of "crap" installed that you should get rid of as these cause all kinds of problems. You should boot Safe Boot mode as it will bypass a lot of these apps kernel extensions. Then uninstall them.

    Stuffit Deluxe and Magic Menu
    Virtual PC
Norton Antivirus (Symantec Antivirus), Norton Utilities?

On second thought, your best bet is to do an "Archive & Reinstall" of the entire system. I think your problems are all software related due to all the stuff that is installed and not compatible with the Intel Architecture. Look at the system log in your post and you will understand what I mean.

I couldn't do anything with it restarting so frequently so I took it into APPLE yesterday in San Jose. They called this afternoon and said they found the 2 Gigs of RAM defective so they will replace them. The machine was "copied" from an earlier version...not Intel Dual Core so this could indeed be part of the problem even though I had cleaned most of the extra programs off the hard drive. I bought it from a friend and had removed all but the basics. I think I will just reformat the hard drive and go directly to Leopard after I get the machine back.. hopefully a clean install will take care of any remaining junk.

Thank you for your time and help with this problem.... kerry
