Resetting IPad

I want to backup my IPad to the IMac and restore it to factory settings but first I want to backup the IPad. When I connect the IPad it starts to sync and starts to backup but then I get an error message that says it can't backup because it is disconnected. I have tried 2 different cords but that didn't help. Any suggestions??
 
Well, youve probably tried theis, but reboot the Mac and hard reset the ipad. Then try. It may help to clear their 'minds'.
