I have a batch of approximately 270.000 pictures in varying sizes. I want to make them rectangular by adding white space on the shortest side. This is doable with a script in Photoshop, but it will take me 3+ days to finish the batch.

Anyone that can suggest an app for this, that does it quicker? Free or not, doesn't matter.

Example; A picture is 250x480 pixels. I want the output file to be 480x480. The extra pixels should be white.

Easy, right? ;)

This sounds like a job for Imagemagick. Here is a video explaining basic functions pretty well (at around 8 minutes)

Thanks for the replys!

I did look at both Graphic Converter as well as ImageMagick, couldn't make it work as I wanted though.
- In GC I did find an image resizer, but not the option to make it wider (or higher) filling up with white.
- I got warnings from other developers about IM, about vulnerability issues, so I never installed it or looked at it any further. Looking at it now it seems it seems like the lurning curve is quite steep, it will take me longer to learn and verify the correct funtions than to process the images with PS...
- Same with Automator, can't find an option to find out the highest width/height.

I have mailed the GC support, in the meanwhile Photoshop has to work in the background.

Try the canvas size option instead, at least when I tried it quickly it filled the rest with white, though that might depend on your settings.

Heck Apple Photos will do that.
Photos > Select All > File > Export > Export Photos ( do not export to desktop with iCloud enabled, pick a non iCloud folder )
270k pictures will take a couple of hours on a properly stacked rig.
You are certainly not trying to do 270k images on a MBP, right?!

For info, the pictures are not of the same size. Some are 480x300, others are 700x289, and so on. Height and Width are unknown.

However, I got an answer from Lemke (@Graphic Converter) about an hour later, and I did a batch of 70.000 pictures in about 40 minutes. Photoshop did the same batch the other day, but needed 12 hours. FWIW I used the "Square" function.

The service from Lemke and the function of the application made it easy to pay the $40. (I actually used GC a lot 20 years ago, it is a great app!)

For those of you that will try something similar in the future, follow this tip: "pick a non iCloud folder". I didn't during my first tries with Photoshop, and it was a constant "fan-maximized" experience....

And yes of course I did it on my great MBP! :)
