I'm new to mac and have been playing around with it last night. The only problem is that I can't seem to resize Pages into a bigger screen. Coming from Word, where the window opens across the whole page, this is rather a nasty shock.

I can get it to go a bit wider but not as much I would like it to. It's terrible for my eyes and I'm struggling to read what I'm typing! I can't imagine working long on it.

Is this an unfortunate feature of Pages?

Do you mean you want to zoom in so the page is bigger?

Go to View -> Zoom -> Zoom In.

Alternatively, look at the bottom of the page, and in the little bar, next to your page, it should have the zoom level, which you can also set from there.

If you want it to default to opening at a higher zoom, just go to Pages -> Preferences and change the default zoom level.
