Shouldn't see a speed bump, just stability changes making the drive moe stable and possibly extending battery life as it will efficiently sleep and wake.

Thank you...I just upgraded to SD25 (even Seagate recommended not updating to SD26 on Lion yet), and I can DEFINITELY see a difference in boot time, applications opening and closing and sleep/wake speed (haven't noticed any battery life differences yet as I use my MBP connected to an ACD with power)...It was rather painless to do...

Wow, truly impressive

I'm running a Late 2006 MacBook Pro and when I first installed the Momentus XT I was a touch disappointed; launch times hadn't significantly improved, it ran loud and hot, and made a consistent beeping noise. I kind of abandoned using it much for a while after that.

Enter yesterday, when I remembered the youth of the product and a possible revision that could improve things. So I checked out the model number, saw an update, but then noticed it wasn't necessarily a mac oriented install. I proceeded to download the recommended file anyways, and did a bit of a search to make sure that a mac install was straightforward enough. I saw some ominous signs along the way though, such as "if your computer loses power it's all over", so I became pretty hesitant. The disc booting methods were unfamiliar as well (using DOS?!) but with this thread's first post I became confident that it was simple enough. And to my delight, I didn't even require any "forcing" and the firmware was downloaded within a minute *phew*.

So anyways, I was running S23 and S25 so far seems to have sped up the boot time, browsing and Safari in general are liquid (I'm also running ~3 gigs of RAM). Also, the beeping issue seems to have gone away, which is great as I don't know that I would like to use the labtop very much any more with it (right after upgrades even, heh). I noticed there was an issue with slight hiccups while running StarCraft yesterday, so hopefully those have gone away too. If so, I highly recommend. I was a bit worried that the bus limitations would be too much, but here I am, quite pleased.

P.S. A small note about the install/boot process. The disc selectable is named "Windows" (Referring to the MS-DOS I'm guessing), so just heads-up that it's a-ok and contains the dedicated firmware install to use. Yes, for your Intel Mac (regardless of whether or not you're using BootCamp).

I found SD25 to be stable on Snow Leopard in my MBP however as the drive always span and it hit the duty cycle when away from mains power. The Momentus XT is now in my Mac Mini late 2009 and runs perfectly.

SD26 is available publicly now

Here is the Seagate Momentus XT SD26 firmware update. SD26 is the latest version of the drive's firmware as of the end of August, 2011. If you search around, you will easily see that new Momentus XT drives are shipping with this version of the firmware, but Seagate isn't making it easy to attain this firmware...I make no guarantees that this firmware is non-beta, I am doing some research to see if it is the final version of SD26 or if any beta versions were ever made. This firmware was made on 5/9/11.

Updating the firmware or now?

OK I have a MacBook Pro late 2008 with 4GB RAM running Lion.
I just installed one Momentus XT 500GB 7200 RPM and it seems to be running just fine.
Here is what I got:
Model: ST9500420AS
Revision: 0002SDM1

Now the revision bit is nothing like what I saw before on this forum.

I tried to burn 2 CDs with the S25 update but it just doesn't work (CD is blank!)
Now I wonder if i really need to do this firmware update?

If yes, can I just simply boot in Windows mode, download the updater (MomentusXT-ALL-SD25.exe) and run it from the BOOTCAMP partition? (the partition is on the moments disk itself)

If I can't burn a CD, what other options are available?

Oh and one last thing: are there different firmwares whether you are on Mac or on PC?

Hope some of you have some reply to these questions.

Thank you
