Back when the 2013 iMac came out, there was speculation that Apple might release a thinner Thunderbolt Display (with USB 3) to match the appearance of the new iMac. Sadly, no such monitor has materialized (still no USB 3 equipped Apple monitor).

Now, given the proposed update to the Mac Pro, it seems likely that if Apple ever does put out a new Thunderbolt Display, it will be 4K (purely speculation, on my part, mind you).

If such speculation turns out to be correct, won't this pose a problem for iMac owners? From my understanding, (and I would be happy to be proven wrong) Thunderbolt 1 is not capable of supporting 4K, correct?

Is it possible that the current generation of iMac will never get a matching external monitor? (thinner chassis, less reflective screen, USB 3 ports, 27" with 2560x1440 resolution, etc) I suppose that if they spec bump the iMac it will get Thunderbolt 2, but owners of the current iMac could get caught in a "resolution gap" -- the monitor that matches their computer isn't supported.

Does this seem like a possibility to anyone else?
