I just bought a 720p lcd. I have it connected to my aluminum imac with a vga cable. I am having trouble setting it up properly. When I go to displays, and I click mirror displays, it makes my imac look terrible.

Basically, I would like to keep my imacs resolution at 1280x800, and mirror the image on my lcd at whatever widescreen resolution looks best. (suggested scan rates 800x600,1024x768,1360x768)

I am farely certain that for mirroring displays they have to be set at the same resolution. Since the 720p (I am guessing TV 1360x768?) is of a lower resolution than the iMac you are stuck with a poor quality display on the iMac when mirroring. Otherwise you will need to choose some lower resolution that looks acceptable on each.
