Brand new iPhone 8. Set up as a new iPhone. A few days after using it, "Rest finger to open" for unlocking the phone no longer works as expected. If I wake up my phone (either by raising it or pressing the side button), and then rest my finger on the home button, it doesn't unlock about 75% of the time.

Some observations:
  • If I rest my finger, lift it, and then rest again, it usually does work.
  • If I rest and then press, it works, despite the "lock" icon at the top never indicating it was successfully authenticated. Of course, "pressing" shouldn't be required if "rest" is activated.
  • If I wake my device, and then quickly rest and lift my finger, it works more frequently. Odd that leaving my finger on there longer would work less consistently.

Things I've tried:
  • Restarted my phone.
  • Disabled and re-enabled "rest finger to open"
  • Disabled and re-enabled "Use TouchID to unlock phone"
  • Deleted the finger in TouchID, added other fingers.
  • Ensured I'm on 11.0.3

I was unable to recreate this on my girlfriend's iPhone 8, so I know not every iPhone is affected. However, other people seem to also have this problem. I'm curious how widespread it is, or if anyone has found a solution.

No problems here - in fact, I feel like Apple made a silent upgrade in TouchID this year. Seems to work better and faster than it ever did on my 7.

Sounds to me like you have a faulty TouchID sensor.

Forgot to mention that on the TouchID page, you can rest a finger and it'll highlight which one it is. When I do that, it recognizes it lightning fast. It seems to be the lock screen that isn't processing it properly.

Mine also does this on my iPhone 7 Plus. No problems at all unlocking the phone normally, but on the ‘rest to open’ parts I’d say mine only works about 50% of the time. Touch ID sensor is fine. It’s obviously software related.

EDIT - Ignore my post. I misread your original post. Mines works fine when resting to unlock. It’s when trying to go directly into an app (as shown in the attached screenshot) I run into issues.

I have the same issue on my 8+. I often times have to "click" my thumb for it to recognize that I want to get past the lock screen even though the rest finger to open is checked.

Since this involves very little extra time I haven't done anything about it and it is a minor annoyance, but yeah, nowhere near my 6s+ which recognized it instantly and unlocked instant.

Doesn't work on my 8+ 50% of the time. I tried 10 times. Worked 5 times. Didn't work 5 times.

The only time I see the fingerprint screen is if I'm opening an app from a notification and the app is fingerprint protected. Otherwise touching the TouchID is instantaneous.

I have this exact same problem. Happens on both my 7+ and 8+ both running iOS 11.1
It didn’t behave this way on my 7+ running 10.3.3 as far as I can remember.
