Restore files from Trash...

Hi all... I'm new to this forum and relatively new to the world of Macs (been actively using Macs for about 2 years now). I'm the CTO in a web development company that uses both PCs and Macs. I use a MacBook Air (3 years old) at home (replaced my PC notebook of 10 years).

I, too, did what another poster did... accidentally started deleting everything in the All Documents folder under Search for... When I realized what was happening, I stopped it, but not before 5,000+ items were sent to the Trash. I've been googling this for over 2 hours and ultimately ended up here.

I have to say that, as a "new" Mac user, I'm quite disappointed at what I've seen in this forum. The majority of the posts seem to do nothing but complain... either about the lack of a "restore" function in OS X or, more so, how stupid the users are for "sccidentally" deleting items that they don't want to delete. I'm sure this won't be a popular post and will probably receive numerous "flames"! But I just had to say how rude and absolutely self-centered these posts are! You're not helping anyone by calling them "stupid" (even if you're just implying it!). And you certainly aren't winning any new converts!

I don't know how to tell you "guys", but most people don't purposely "accidentally" delete items... hence the term "accidentally"! Yes, as a systems consultant for over 30 years, I've run into my share of people that store items in the Recycle bin. I've even emptied a few only to be screamed at for "deleting" items they were storing! But... those of us who've accidentally deleted items aren't helped by those of you telling us how stupid we are. I'm willing to stake my entire professional career on betting that not one... NOT ONE... of those bitching about people deleting what they shouldn't have... HAVE NOT DONE IT THEMSELVES at least once... perhaps more than once!

Sorry about the rant... I just can't stand it when people kick others when they're down! I admit it, I shouldn't have started deleting all the items in the All Documents folder... maybe Apple shouldn't have put it under the Search for... section. Saying that doesn't change what Apple did just like telling me I'm stupid for doing what I did doesn't undo it. I goofed and I need help. If you're not going to help me, then don't tell me how stupid I am... that only shows how stupid you are.

I apologize if I've offended anyone I shouldn't have and... I hope that those who have posted here because they needed help will find that help... if not here... perhaps on a "kinder" forum. I only hope this particular thread is not indicative of the kind of posts found on the rest of the forum.

Thanks to those of you who read this post to this point. I hope your questions are answered...

I agree with that...most things in life do not let you have a second chance but those that do are extremely helpful. I mean, if you're never going to make a mistake ever....what's the point in cmd+z? Why were pencil erasers and liquid paper invented? Clearly just for those that haven't adopted the philosophy that mistakes are bad, and lived by it.

If you have a backup with Time Machine, that may be help. However, if there is no backup with your computer, you can try data recovery software to find back all your lost files in trash bin. One more important thing, if you want to recover them back, you need to make sure that the data hasn't been overwritten. If it has, there is no opportunity to get back your lost files.
