New phone: restore from backup or clean install?

I’ve always restored from backup, but it was nice to start fresh with iPhone X. With iCloud sync, even my health and activity from Watch came over.

Restoring from new synced over your health data? How much health data? For example I have 2.5 years of health data which includes things like HR, steps, sleep, workouts, weight measurements, etc... would all that be synced over? Or is it just a subset of information?

Edit: looking into this, I see that encrypted health data is a new feature of iOS 11. I was unaware of this. Pretty cool

Everything was synced.

All the data from the Health app synced.
All the data from Activity app synced.
I have my achievements, etc...

It even remembered that me and my wife are sharing activity data.

This was added in iOS 11, so make sure you have it turned on in iCloud. It may be off by default. I turned it on and let it sit on the charger on WiFi for a while to make sure it had time to sync.

Yes, it did sync pre-iOS 11 data.

In reply to your edit: Yes!

Before iOS 11, I was looking at options to set up a phone as new without needing to restore from backup.

I didn’t care about losing messages, but my health data is some of the most useful data on my phone. There were a couple of sites that recommended apps tha would harvest your health data from a backup and migrate it to a new phone.

I didn’t trust the apps to not be malicious or introduce their own problems.

I was really glad to see that health was added to iCloud, removing the need for third party apps or restoring from a backup.
