Other Restore iPhone XS with IOS 11 backup to IOS 12

Currently have iPhone 6S running IOS 11 and upgrading to iPhone XS tomorrow. I have a backup of the current iPhone on iTunes but wanted to know if I have to upgrade the old phone to IOS 12 do another backup and restore on the new iPhone from that copy.

I ask because I am out of room on the iPhone 6S and will have to delete alot of stuff to make room for the IOS 12 update.

if you want to restore from your 6s backup to the new phone, both need to be on the same OS.

It should work. Going backwards is usually where you’ll get an error (like restoring an iOS 12 backup to an iOS 11 device won’t work).

no they don't. iOS 12 can totally read an iOS 11 backup.

It will work fine, no need to update your current phone.
