My iphone 4 is stuck in the 'connect to itunes' screen after I tried to upgrade to IOS 5. The process gets stuck on 'Restoring Firmware' than give me a message box say an unknown error occurred (1).
So far I have:
Tried a different USB port
Unplugged all other USB devices
Reset computer
Tried a different user
Re-downloaded Itunes and IOS 5
Turned off all security
Made sure Computer was up to date

as well as tried a new computer while repeating the above

I have also called Apple with no luck. I will call again later.
HAHA the closest apple store is also 3 hours away but that may just have to be my solution...

Any thoughts?

Put the phone in DFU mode first and then it will restore it for you.

I have tried but it is stuck on the screen with the itunes picture with the usb cord. Can you still do it from there?

Make sure the phone is hook up to your computer, press & hold power button and home button until the Itunes picture with the usb cord disappear. Release the power button and keep holding home button until your computer detect the phone. you will then can restore your phone.

Hmm still no luck on the restore after 2 tries in DFU mode
Tomorrow I may take it to Seattle to the apple store but I will try any suggestions!

download Tiny Umbrella, run it while your phone is hooked to your PC, once TU detect your phone, hit "exit recovery".
