i have my friend's 3g, some ****** dropped it in a lake for him. the home button isn't working and the phone has a password on it he doesn't remember making. itunes won't touch the phone and i can't get to DFU mode to use pwnage tool. any ideas?

Its pretty much done.
Like Aggie said try to sell it on ebay incase anyone wants it.
Tell them about the water damage and the rest of the problems with it though.

even though it turns on it's toast? i can turn it on up to the passcode screen and of course don't have it. it charges and hooks up to itunes...

Not much you can do with it water damaged and without a working homebutton though.
Up to you if you want to charge it up and just bring it to the passcode screen. And then keep doing the same😀
