Hello. I made the mistake of updating my iPhone to 3.1 when I first got it last week and it seemed I would never be able to unlock it. Luck has it though that the iPhone I got was defect, and after a trip to the apple store I have a brand new one in my hands now with 3.0.1 installed and the old baseband! However, I am afraid of what might happen if I try to restore from backup. This is especially a problem since I am using Softbank in Japan, and I have no idea what the settings an password are for the email account they have provided for me. Is it safe for me to restore from backup or do I need to find an alternate way of figuring out my email settings? I don't really care about app settings either, it's just very inconvenient if I can't access my softbank email address.

I am sorry if this question has been asked before; I couldn't find it, and I thank in advance for any answers.

I had the same thing happen to me. Itunes will not allow you to restore a backup of 3.1 on the 3.01 software. It will make you update the phone. I did read a thread somewhere saying you can modify the backup file name to make it work.
