So, I know the hard way of doing this with injecting the ipsw, but the end result is still kind of clunky. Are there any official methods yet of doing a clean install but retaining call history, imessage, and photos?

I'll go with the clunker way but it's a little strange that Apple hasn't even attempted to address this.

Reason: my 7+ has unexplained battery drain after clearing settings and p-resetting. I'm using a backup from my 6s+. All other performance is fine but the battery drain is giving me about 6-8 hours of use versus 10 hours on the previous device. Under 70% after 2.5 hours today off charge. Usage probably about 90 minutes with only Safari and Messages.

Decipher activity tools allow for something similar, but for anything other than health data you have to buy the app from the developer. Only health is free.
