Restoring from Backup, iPhone 3G to iPhone 2G

I have 2 iPhones:

3G with 4.2.1 (8C148)

2G with 3.1.2 (7D11)


What I want to do is backup the 3G, and reload it onto the 2G (restore from backup) via iTunes, is this possible??

I keep trying to, but it wont let me. any solutions??
