Restoring my iPhone backup

I have erased all contents and settings and restored using a backup from iTunes. All seems well so far but as far as the apps that have been restored, they are grayed and there is an inscription saying "waiting" when i pressed them to open. What is going on?

They were waiting to be downloaded again to your iPhone. Apps will show up as restored but must be downloaded to be completed.

what is the point of a backup then if the user needs to redownload every app?
