For some reason the function keys on my mac book changed, I restored them and now the shift keys have the function of showing the desktop and all windows.

I there a way I can restore the original function?

System Preferences > Keyboard & Mouse > Keyboard Shortcuts

System Preferences > Exposé & Spaces > Exposé > Keyboard and Mouse Shortcuts.

Do you mean the Shift keys that en/disable upper and lower case letters?

I think Shift can only be used as a keyboard shortcut if used with another key.

i have the same problem with right shift key and this answer is not working,
i couldnt use the shift key to write capital or question mark
is there anyway to restore the original setting to the shift key ?

Give this a try. The most likely cause is the key being bound to the "speak selected text" option in Speech preferences.
