The profile has gone private, I suspect in panic.

That happened when I posted a photo here of an Apple employee enjoying a glass of champagne on Jony Ive's jet on the way to Paris. Several Apple employees went private after that.

I wonder if that was done out of fear of reprisal (it does paint a decadent image that might be misconstrued by some), or the work of Apple PR and the tight ship they run behind the scenes. Perhaps both.

Who knows. I know when I posted it in this forum I didn't expect it to end up on the front page of MR (and I think it ended up on 9to5Mac too). Had it stayed just in this forum the guy might never have gone private.

FAKE

Circular groove to hold a square #⌚️ makes zero sense. Even it's dimensions seem to be not fitting the #⌚️. And how the watch would be prevented from rattling in such a box?

It doesn't take a genius to print a sticker and slap it on some existing watch box or Photoshop it in. If it was indeed Photoshopped in, perhaps Apple should hire the guy as their in-house Photoshop "pros" are not so pro it seems:

Circular groove makes perfect sense. Have you seen the bottom of an Apple Watch? The sensor circle will fit in the groove the rest of the watch will appear floating, the packaging seems very Apple.

Huh? THIS grove will fit the sensor circle?!

What circular groove are you guys even talking about?

Yes, I think this is real and I am sure we are not seeing all of the pieces of the box. It is of a quality I have seen $500 - $1000 watches in.

Location tag

Just so everyone knows, 51 Astor Place, which is where this photo is tagged, is owned by IBM, but also home to the Daily Mail NYC office.

Some comments on 9to5Mac are appauled with this packaging. Seems typically minimalist Apple to me. I'm going to wait until we get reviews to judge. The poster on Instagram said the packaging was "top notch". I'll trust his judgement over people making assumptions on the quality of packaging based on an Instagram photo. Below is what Jony Ive told the Finacial Times re: Apple Watch packaging:

“We didn’t want the packaging to be a sort of shorthand for value, where the box needs to be big and we have to include expensive materials. We’ve always liked the idea that if we are heavy in our thinking, we can be much lighter in the implementation. So there’s huge virtue, I think, in keeping the packaging small: at least, it is the right choice environmentally, it’s easier to move things around and you don’t end up with your wardrobes full of large watch boxes that you don’t use.”

I wouldn't be surprised if Lisa Jackson was involved or at least signed off on the final packaging. I'm sure the number one priority for the non-Edition boxes was to be highly recyclable.

While I LIKE a nice box it is not why I am buying the watch. Any Edition level watch much come in an expensive looking box. I would expect the $999 SS with Link to be in a fairly nice box and hope they will surprise us with a stand of some kind.

The Sport could be in a shrink wrapped plastic box for all I care. I would expect it to be simpler than the other 2.

I do not understand why the poster above me has such an issue with one side of the box having printing on it. The bottom probably has serial numbers also.

I have a feeling only the Edition will get a special fancy box. I'm sure Apple's thinking is people don't keep the box or if they do it's only for resale purposes. I'll wait for official reviews/unboxing. The box might look plain but is really high quality. The guy on Instagram said the packaging was "top notch".

I'm very much so disliking this here. I want a clean box.

Yep. That is un-Apple. It shouldn't have more than this (all other details should be printed at the bottom).

The rest is pretty good.

What are people going to do with their box? I keep my iPhone and iPad boxes for resale. Everything else gets tossed in the recycle bin.

I keep all the actual product packaging as I know I will be selling it on at some point. It may or may not be worth more with the packaging but it is better presentation wise and looks better. I still have the packaging for my iPad Air 2 and iPhone 6 Plus as I know I will be selling them when I upgrade in the future.

The reviews are out. That WAS the box and you can see them in detail in the review. One of the reviewers did say all 3 models had different packaging like I expected. I have not seen what the sports model gets yet but have not been though all of the reviews yet.
