Its a high quality display with a certain number of ppi (pixels per inch) that allows you to not distinguish the difference between each pixel at a normal viewing distance. (I believe its 326 ppi but I'm not definite on that). So basically its insanely high-res.
Yes it is literally transparent. It's almost magic.
Another very useful feature in iPhone 5 is the ability to project and hologram to have 3d multitouch. You should really go to an Apple Store and try it.
