OK, there it is. :) A 1080p-retina 24'' iMac.. I think it's reasonable to expect a retina version in 24'' this autumn then, as an addition to the regular iMac line.

I think it is very reasonable to expect to see a 4K retina 24" iMac appear. I suggested the same in another thread a few days ago. The screens are available, and considering a 15" retina MacBook Pro can drive 5 megapixels with integrated graphics, a dedicated graphics card should to be able to drive 8 megapixels.

Even the 15 megapixels of a retina version of the 27" screen don't seem beyond possibility with that comparison. Although with the ever increasing iMac screen sizes, I wouldn't be surprised to see that in 30" format.

I'm actually surprised that Apple doesn't finally have the clout (or volume) to just order up exactly whatever cpu and graphics and screen size that they need period, as custom parts from the various vendors as technology progresses in general. Maybe they do and will use it when the time is right.

Apple is a tiny percentage of the masses of PCs out there. They have a "special" relationship with Intel which allows them to ocassionally get parts a little sooner and they can get nVidia to whip up slightly unique versions of GPU's like the 750M with GDDR5 or the 755M but they don't sell the volume for custom parts aside from a few small bits and pieces. iPhones and iPads, however, are a different story.

There are even 15" displays at 4k, e.g. in the Toshiba P50(t)-B or the Asus NX500/GX500. Can't judge the quality of those, but the fundamental technology for 4k-screens smaller than 27"/24" is available today.

In reverse that means that a Retina iMac is technologically already possible as well.

Not realistically, I think. It's more difficult to produce a larger retina 27'' monitor, than a 15'' MBP, or esp. an iPad or iPhone. Then there are the GPU considerations...

Even Philips makes a 4k 28" monitor at 60hz at 599$
So they need to make their own displays (iMacs and Thunderbolt display). And this year should happen because if not , until October 20015 is waaay to long.

I really think this year is a BIG year for Apple
they need to update mac mini and apple tv (because lots of people use them and a lot of them want to buy for the first time but they wait for the new one), iMAC and thunderbolt display with a higher PPI and internal updates(and yes if Geforce release the 980M in October that is a hint), the iphones and the ipads. Not to talk about the so called rumoured since 2010 iwatch..
But still if they release everything above ..GOD this will be the year of apple in tech

Phill at stage: " What will be a next generation All in One?? "
Phill: " A killer new display, at least i wanted"

PS Remember the macbook pro in 2012 presentation :D

You're right. Smaller than I thought last quarter at 10%. Seems like I see more macs than anything else, but probably most business still use PC.

For retina on a proper 27'' iMac it should be 980MX - ie. downclocked version of the upcoming GTX880 (like the 680MX of GTX680). I really hope Apple will go back to offering an MX-card for the regular iMac too.

Agreed, the GTX 680MX was the last incredibly impressive GPU in any Apple system. It may also be the first incredibly impressive GPU in any Apple system, ever, and it's a shame the 2013 iMac was such a minimal upgrade. I'd love to see a GTX 980MX; it might even be sweet enough to upgrade my 2012!

upgrade just for the gpu?

Same here! :) If Apple releases a new 27'' with a GTX980MX, I'd probably upgrade too - IF it can overclock properly without throttling.

If the 980MX is indeed Maxwell-based, chances are that no throttling is necessary. Had a 6850 in my old Antec Aria case and the fans would rev up to disturbing levels even idling, yet I still could have the whole thing overheating. Switched to a (Maxwell) 750ti and the difference is like night and day!

Same to slightly better performance for about half the power consumption (=heat dissipation). 1slot small fan solution vs. huge 2slot cooling solution. The Maxwell card is powered exclusively via the PCIe slot, where the 6850 requires additional external power. It's more impressive hands-on than words can reflect.

Perhaps Maxwell would even allow to eventually use a desktop GPU in the iMac...

So the 780M is worse than 680MX?
Seems that 80% in October event a new iMac with 980M at least (if not 980MX) will be presented.

As Maxwell would allow to use desktop GPU chips in the current thermal envelope, I'd expect more than just a 980M(X)...

until there are rumors for a retina 27" screen, it's pointless. Such a great undertaking of unprecedented resolution will be leaked before you see the imac retina.

Mac leaks are much rarer than iOS leaks. Lack of rumours is not a reliable indicator.

Quite a few think they might go for a 4K screen. They are available in multiple sizes, so there is precedent if they go that way.

There would be nothing special about the pixel density or size. 8K screens have been made, so companies like Sharp know how to make even higher overall resolutions. The capability is in place for making a 27" retina screen that pixel doubles the current resolution.

Another thing to take into account is iMac screen sizes have increased over the years. 27" has probably had the longest timespan as the biggest. We might see something new with the next redesign.

but monitor resolution rumors are much bigger than just a mac rumor. When 4K displays went into mass production, it was all over the web. To create a 27" "retina" display, you'll be sure you will hear about it.

Also, i don't know what quite a few means, but i will put money down that apple will not go 4K for 27". Because it's not retina. IT just isn't.

so i think thunderbolt 2, 980M(X), and up to 64Gb Ram DDR4 are for sure in the next upgrade in October. Retina display 50%-50%

Ideao iMac retina must have resolution on the range from 3K (21") to 5k(27"), while a 4K iMac 27 it's OK for retina concept, but 4K content edition requires a bit more to allow a full 4k preview window and provide space for tools, indicators, scrolls etc.
