Mavericks didnt really help that much, it got a tiny bit better.
I still see laggs, and animations being choppy. Sad.

There're things I have disabled that I do not want slowing down my MBP after upgrading to Yosemite. I've disabled all extensions in System Preferences. Notifications is also disabled altogether.

Third and most importantly are the horrible Spotlight trifecta features (Spotlight suggestions, Bookmark and History, and Bing Web Searches) as well as their Safari Preferences counterparts (Include Search Engine Suggestions + Include Spotlight Suggestions.)

Not only are they intrusive, I found they were eating up system memory by running a background process searching the web for personal data I was looking for on my HD (thanks Apple.)

And to top it off I had to force-quit the doggone process first time I disabled it as it just remained there gobbling up resources for no reason.

Sorry to hear that. This is where your warranty kicks in.

Hello guys,

I have this Retina Macbook Pro 13" late 2013 for about 5 months.
Intel Core i5 4288U 2.6 Ghz
2x4GB DDR3 1600Mhz Ram
Intel Iris 5100 with 1.2 Ghz max. clock
512GB PCIe SSD
Mac OS X Yosemite

And I just really dont like the performance. When playing minecraft and watching a yt video minecraft drops down frames and is unplayable. Youtube is sluggish, web browsing is laggy with firefox. Windows 7 is extremely horrible, the retina screen is making so much performance go away. Im really dissapointed and I will probably get a 13" Macbook Air or 2012 13" Macbook pro with NO RETINA SCREEN. Im still waiting for the new Broadwell macbooks tho.
Am i the only one who has this problem? My macbook is so laggy and nothing is really smooth

upgrade to a 15 inch!

Gaming performance is perfect for me, i get double the frames my old laptop with the HD 6490M had. The Iris 5100 is as strong as a NVIDIA GT 8800, my old GT 120 mac pro can easily run my 2560x1600 30" Screen without any laggs. On the 13" its just basically overkill because the gpu has to downscale the graphics and everything.

Chris thats exactly how it is with my macbook pro. I cant live with that.

No way in hell is the iris 5100 as strong as an Nvidia 8800GT. Where did you get that from?

Why is everyone coming up with gaming? I only play Minecraft. I used to play stuff like battlefield 3 and 4 on my laptop but since i got my custom build pc and mac pro i dont play games like that on the macbook.
I stored my mac pro away because the custom build pc outperforms the mac pro so much.

Intel Core i5 4690K Quad 3.5 Ghz
Gigabyte Z97 D3H
2x4GB DDR3 1333Mhz Corsair Value CL9
Cooler Master B700 700w
PNY GTX 770 OC

outperforms

Dual Intel Xeon X5650 12 Core 2.66 Ghz
3x4GB DDR3 1333Mhz ECC Ram

I can max out Far cry 4 with the i5 4690k but not with my mac pro. Also the xeon x5650 has a horrible single core performance, as good as AMD FX 6100

Sup guys, little update here. I gave up with the Retina Macbook Pro 13" and gave it to my mom and sister. I got myself a Macbook Air i7/8GB/256GB and holy **** everything is budder smooth here. I dont regret anything. Everything i do is fine now.

i don't have a lot of lag, than again I don't watch youtube and play minecraft and I use sfari.

I did turn down transparency and it's been a revelation.

On my "underpowered" 13" 2014MBP I am typing this in Safari, with 12 tabs open, as I am:

Compiling a video on Contour Storyteller on Yosemite
Running AutoCad in Wimdows 7 at 2560 x 1920 on a VMware VM (running on a Transcend 128 gb drive in the SD card reader bay)
DLing 4 ~2 GB torrent files in parallel on the same VM using VUSE
And I have MotoGP 14 running on Steam.

Switching from OS X to the VM and back is lag-free and instant, switching among any of these apps is flawless, CPU temp is 149 degrees and fans are inaudible at 1600 RPM.

"underpowered" is not how I would describe this laptop.

How is Autocad on the VM? And how much RAM do you have?
Im considering going from my 15" to the 13", but my concern is being able to run SolidWorks in Parallels.

Im probably going to end up buying a 13" just to test it, and return it if it cant handle it.

Id love to see a dGPU in the 13", but that doesnt seem likely. Im anxious to see the performance of the broadwell iGPU against the 650m from the 2012 15".

Don't game at native resolution. Put the game at 1280x800 (non-retina resolution). It'll run fine then, even better than an air. Are you running windows 7 in bootcamp? If so, it should run just fine.

omg, I was never running native 2560x1600, on os x i used 1440x900 and 1680x1050 on windows 7. I played games with 800x600 or 1024x768. Only minecraft ran with 1440x900. Im good with the Macbook air.

I too, recently bought a 13" rMBP BTO (16GB RAM, 512GB) and so far have not experienced any performance issues that you guys are experiencing. So far, I have ran vm (Windows 2008R2, Windows 2012 and Windows 7) using vmfusion and it seems to handle it pretty well. I also play Diablo 3 and WoW once in a while and have not noticed any lag at all.

No such problems on my own 13" rMBP (2.8GHz i7-4558U, 16GB RAM, 512GB PCIe SM0512F).

Games would lag when played at 2560x1600, but are smooth at 1280x800.

No lag in Boot Camp after installing all the right drivers. NFS HP 2010 even runs smoothly at everything low, 1280x800.

Not to be rude, but why didn't you get the 15" retina, just curious

I do have one.

I actually have 12 different Macs.

1 21.5" iMac late-2013 (i7/16/256/750M)
1 27" iMac late-2013 (i7/32/512/780M)
1 27" retina iMac (i7/32/512/M295X)

2 13" rMBPs (one was from a lucky draw, both late-2013, 2.4/4/128 and i7/16/512)
1 15" rMBP late-2013 (2.6GHz i7/16/1TB/750M)

1 Mac Mini mid-2012 (2.6GHz i7/16/FD

2 late-2013 nMPs (12-core/64/1TB/D700 for both)

1 mid-2013 MB Air (i7/8/512)

1 13" cMBP late-2011 (also from lucky draw, 2.4/8/256GB SSD)

1 2009 17" MBP

I'm a software developer and cinematographer by profession (I shoot a mix of 2K and 4K, with my Arri Alexa and EOS-1Dc), so I find myself using almost all of them.

Air runs at 1440x900 with a slower CPU and gpu. There is no reason why running a game at that same resolution with a faster CPU and gpu wouldn't mean faster performance.

For what it's worth, I have the same rMBP as the OP.

Performance was horrible on Yosemite, and I recently (2 days ago) downgraded back to Mavericks and it flies (again). I'd forgotten I had a computer this fast after struggling with Yosemite for the last 3 months.

Did you try and contact Applecare to see what the issues are?

I'm still running Mavericks. I'm waiting to see whether or not 10.10.2 sorts the performance issues that so many have reported.

The Macbook air is running Minecraft smoother, with alot less fps drops. And the overall system is just so smooth.

Yup i made a clean install of Yosemite and Mavericks, Mavericks was alot smoother. I always used 1440x900 resolution. When playing minecraft, when i tried to record with quicktime player, my fps went down to 20s. With the Macbook air im keeping like 50 fps, Minecraft is the only game the macbook air really beats my pro. In games like battlefield 3 my pro beats it by 6 fps.

Recording on Macbook air:

the difference is huge
