im tlaking about customizing the computer before buying it LOL

Huh?

I thought that with cMBP, you could purchase a base model and upgrade memory and storage at a later point which is generally cheaper. But with rMBP, once you purchase the system, you could not upgrade either memory or storage later.

If you buy a system with 8gb memory and 512gb storage, you can't ever increase it with aftermarket parts.

I'm waiting to get my first MacBook, so all this is new to me. Correct me if I made the wrong assumption.

As I said, OWC sells SSDs just for the rMBPs. They are actually more expensive than Apple's prices now, but prices will drop. Physically it is very easy to remove the SSD from the rMBP; it is held in by only one screw.

Thank you. When I spec'ed out the rMBP, I had the option of upgrading to 768gb flash storage. Is that the same as SSD? I see flash used in the newer models while SSD is used in older models.

so stick with 256gb and upgrade later?

I would never rely on that with specialized parts. They do not feed the same market as 2.5" drives.
But this year with Apple likey to not update the cMBP line, Kuo expects 65% acceptance of SSDs, most of which are blades. More people using them means, potentially, cheaper prices for replacements.

alright iil save my 300 bucks then and put it towards ram and processor

well i already spent an extra 200 for upgrading to the retina replacement instead of the regular macbook, and an additional 300 for upgrading to the 2.7ghz and 16gb of ram. im trying to think if its worth another 300 for the jump to a higher SSD drive lol but that seems to be a stretch

so i can not open the brand new replacement, call up apple and ask for a gift card???

Last time I got a replacement, I did it in-store, so after I got the replacement, I also got a receipt. Then I returned it to a gift card the unopened computer and receipt. Technically you could open it and still return it, but I see as a d-bag move.
