I was having trouble with the screen shutting off on my brand new 2012 Retina MacBook Pro. After some troubleshooting and a quick call to Apple Technical Support, I figured out that simply placing it on top of my 17" MacBook Pro makes it think the lid is shut (which makes the keyboard and trackpad unusable.)

I posted this video on YouTube of it in action.

I agree. I wouldn't call it odd. It's not something you need to troubleshoot.

I didn't know it was the magnets at first... All I knew is that every time I tried to reboot, the screen went black again. Definitely something to troubleshoot.

Obviously, it's happening because you're setting the MBPR close enough to the magnets in the 17".

My coworker's 2010 MacBook Air doesn't do this, and it's plenty thin.

You didn't tell us that bit. All I read and saw was of your screen going black on top of the other MacBook Pro.
