I'm going to college next fall, too, and I needed to upgrade my current MacBook (white). It has 2 gigs of RAM, and an Intel 2.4 GHz dual core CPU.
I was waiting for this update to buy a new one, and eventually ordered the standard MBPR. For me, that's a pretty significant spec bump, which means I can get rid of my desktop reserve PC for "heavier" stuff, as well as a faster machine for the regular things. What I'll be using it for, mainly, is writing, surfing, watching movies and such. So I'm a pretty mainstream user in that regard. I do play some games, as well.
What it boiled down to for me, was that I wanted a 15 inch with SSD, and I also liked the new design. The main factor, however, was simply that I had the cash, and upgrading the regular MBP with the retina's specs, put me in the same price range. I know that my regular needs don't really call for the retina model, but then I know that I have a Mac that will last for years, even though it's not upgradable. I would have liked the opportunity, but in reality, I have never upgraded a machine, and by the time I felt I needed to, it was time to get a new one.
What I also see, with my current Mac, is that simple things like having 15 or so tabs open in Firefox along with several documents and perhaps some videos, can make it laggy. When doing research, for example, that is annoying. I also feel that the size and weight of the MBPR is good enough for me to carry around with books.
Oh, and I also got the educational discount, so it was a little bit cheaper for me, so I felt I got a decent enough deal for the buck.
