No, they really aren't. The new MBPR weights 4.46 pounds. If anyone finds that "too heavy" to carry, they have bigger problems.

What a stupid statement. The air weighs about the same as a book. The MBP weighs about the same as 3 books. Added to an already full backpack and it's a pain in the ass. So sick of you Apple fanboys being full of it.

I have last years 13" air with the i7 processor, and i love it; however, I bought the retina pro yesterday, and I love it more. Im probably going to sell the Air. Does "CS" mean you're studying computer science? I'd think that you'd want the extra screen real estate. I love this retina screen and the flexibility that it provides. I've never found 4.6 lbs to be terribly heavy even on a daily basis. It doesn't sound to me like the weight difference would be an issue for you. I would recommend the pro for you.

You should sell the retina right now. You can make some serious change on it and then rebuy in a couple of months.

I would say it is worth the price for the retina display and the processor bump. It is more likely to last a longer time than the air because it's more "future proof"

What kind of junior college do you go to? Engineering textbooks are heavy, usually around 4 pounds each. So yeah, it's like carrying another book. The MacBook Air probably weighs as much as the paperback you're toting to your fingerpainting class.

The 13" MBA weighs 2.96 pounds. The MBPR weighs 4.46 pounds.

4.46/2.96 ≈ 1.5

So, either the MBA weighs 1 book and the MBPR weighs 1.5 books, or the MBPR weighs 3 books and the MBA weighs 2 books.

Either way we're talking about pretty light books (3 pounds in the first scenario or 1.5 pounds in the second scenario). Not anything like the huge textbooks I usually have to lug around to class.

Math fail...?

I'm going to college next fall, too, and I needed to upgrade my current MacBook (white). It has 2 gigs of RAM, and an Intel 2.4 GHz dual core CPU.

I was waiting for this update to buy a new one, and eventually ordered the standard MBPR. For me, that's a pretty significant spec bump, which means I can get rid of my desktop reserve PC for "heavier" stuff, as well as a faster machine for the regular things. What I'll be using it for, mainly, is writing, surfing, watching movies and such. So I'm a pretty mainstream user in that regard. I do play some games, as well.

What it boiled down to for me, was that I wanted a 15 inch with SSD, and I also liked the new design. The main factor, however, was simply that I had the cash, and upgrading the regular MBP with the retina's specs, put me in the same price range. I know that my regular needs don't really call for the retina model, but then I know that I have a Mac that will last for years, even though it's not upgradable. I would have liked the opportunity, but in reality, I have never upgraded a machine, and by the time I felt I needed to, it was time to get a new one.

What I also see, with my current Mac, is that simple things like having 15 or so tabs open in Firefox along with several documents and perhaps some videos, can make it laggy. When doing research, for example, that is annoying. I also feel that the size and weight of the MBPR is good enough for me to carry around with books.

Oh, and I also got the educational discount, so it was a little bit cheaper for me, so I felt I got a decent enough deal for the buck.
