Retina MacBook Pro Users Still Complaining of Image Persistence

To Retina (LG) owners with no issues so far

If you have a Retina with LG and haven't noticed Image Retention yet, just wait. On the Apple forum there are people who commented in July about having no issues and are just now coming back and saying IR has started showing up and getting worse progressively.

Don't waste your 14 days if you are still in there, replace and hope for Samsung.

I do yes.

However given that no other gadget I own, be it my PlayBook, Galaxy S3, Vita, or one of the many other devices with screens display the issue, its not my glasses.

That, and the fact that I rarely use glasses for things like iPads due to them being so close :)
 
I'm an early adopter. My retina MacBook Pro just started to show image persistence a few days ago. It's not as bad as some people's but it is still noticeable, and kind of irritating.

The computer is otherwise the best system I have ever owned. I hope this issue can be resolved. I have used IPS displays in the past for several years and never experienced image persistence to this degree before.

Actually, it is normal. Mfgrs have spent years trying to work image retention out of LCDs, mainly for TVs, where there is often constant motion and retention is unacceptable for the usage. The whole 60/120/240/etc refresh rate wars are part of this work. "Normal" doesn't make it acceptible, don't confuse the two. (plasma has more danger of permanent image retention, that is the only difference)

For it to last 5 minutes, as some have posted, suggests sub-par LCD tech at best. This should be embarrassing for Apple in what is perceived to be the highest-end laptop they sell. If they can narrow it to one supplier, they will have some discussions, no doubt.

I've heard that Apple is being stingy on replacements for dead pixels. Apparently a few dead pixels falls within ISO spec given the number of pixels in the rMBP. I believe this is the spec it's based on: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ISO_13406-2

Apparently it's up to the Genius' discretion as to whether or not you get a replacement machine or "your machine falls within spec".
 
Would this problem happen in iPad 2's? I know they don't have a retina screen but maybe a similar technology, just not as many pixels?

I just know my iPad 2 does ghost images for a while (I got freaked out that my internet browser had burned its way into the screen when I first noticed it but then noticed the image would eventually go away).

If Apple does not see this as a problem what makes you think they are going to try to correct it for the next revision?

People waiting for the next rmbp are going to be seriously disappointed.

I have an LG with very very slight ghosting only visible on a dark gray background. Here's a secret I do to not notice it. I switched the background to a different color... Amazing right?

It's an old problem but seems not to be affecting Samsung displays used for the Retina MBP. Retina MBPs with a Samsung display seem to never show any image retention, ever. It might be that they use a different technology than LG which is immune to the issue.

That's why most users being affected are playing the replacement card over and over until they get the rMBP with a Samsung display instead of an LG. They don't find acceptable to have paid the same price to get an inferior product compared to someone else who happened to be lucky to get a Samsung in the first place.
 
<sarcasm>Since when do we care how well it works. I thought it was all about the "WOW, that is thin!" factor. I mean, performance surely wasn't taken into consideration when they removed wired ethernet on a pro system, or when they decided you could never upgrade the memory after you buy it. Means I have to buy a new system in 2 years when my new version of software works better with another 8GB RAM. hmm wonder if that is what they really want me to do? </sarcasm>

According to Apple, an iPad with a pink and yellow screen falls within spec.

Basically, they'll feed you any old BS they can just to keep your money locked away. Luckily most people call them within the returns period.

It might be different in-store, but every time I've called them they've replaced my MacBook almost instantly the first few times. Now they have to get supervisory permission to do it, but the last guy I spoke to actually acknowledged to me that they are having a lot of problems with the displays on the new MacBooks (not just limited to image retention).

Not to add fuel to the fire, but my last 2 rMBPs, which both went back due to very bad yellow tinting issues, both had dimmer displays than my first 2, which were both samsung. Whilst I didnt check the display models for number 3 and 4, its safe to assume that they too were likely LG displays.
 
maybe im wrong, but how is it "normal" for ghosting to happen if it only happens with LG. if it was "normal" it would happen on samsung as well and it doesnt. saying its normal is bs. LG has an inferior screen plain and simple.

Matter of fact, I went to the Grand Central Apple Store 3 days ago. The "genius" was very nice, and took all of his time to run tests on my mac. The conclusion was that my LCD panel has issues. However, he only offered me to change the LCD panel for free, but wait one to two weeks for my computer to get repaired (not possible for me, as I am a student and that I rely on my rMBP on a daily basis).
In addition to that, I have Apple Care and was surprised not having access to a whole new rMBP... :mad:

My iPad 2 does that. Chrome and Tweetbot usually the "culprit" since they have static interface elements and when I quit, I can still see those parts for a minute or two. Then again, I didn't pay $2600 for the iPad and I don't use it for anything serious so not too bothered with it. Retina MBP on the other hand sucked with IR. Switch from one Eclipse view to another? For the next 10 minutes you can still enjoy both views!!

Anyone who has owned a Mac with multipul display suppliers. Check out the MBA forums. The preferred choices is Samsung display + SSD, as opposed to LG and Toshiba.

I wonder what issues will come up with the new iPhone's LG display.
 
Hehehehee... remember when we used to need screensavers in the mid-90s (well, and before..) to prevent burn-in? :)

Rev A is a myth. I bought a Rev A MacPro and it was a great machine I used until recently without serious issues. Same for my Rev A iPad. I recall some Rev B and Rev C Mac models having particular issues with faint buzzing in the audio output line. Anyone who got a unit with a Samsung panel has a fine Rev A experience. Sometimes you get lucky, sometimes you don't, sometimes an issue does not affect you, and sometimes you just live with it.

Anyone buying a Retina Mac is doing it for the display. That one supplier's display has such a prominent problem greatly impacts the experience, purchase satisfaction, and resale value. That they market the display as being the most awesome thing you've ever seen, it should not have such noticeable image persistence. This issue deserves discussion and resolution, neither of which Apple has provided.

I wish other Mac news sites would get on Apple for poor quality control (see also: Mountain Lion).
 
I called apple care last week about this. The rep told me it was normal and that I should shut the screen off when it starts to happen. Very annoying for working with graphics, which is the entire reason I bought the machine.

This is my first time getting apple care, and I'm not impressed.

Just ran the little command line test, and yes, I have a LG display. :(
 
Both of my iMacs developed this problem over time. Apple support weren't interested when I contacted them.
