retina MB fails to recognise some external HDDs

my 2014 rMB picks up Mac-formatted HDD's - yet not FAT32 or whatever.
wife's 2012 MBAir has no issues with this at all.
is it the rMB or is it Yosemite?
any assistance much appreciated …
