According to the System Profiler, the headphone out, which is called "Combination Output" is maybe actually ALSO an SPDIF input!

If you click on Audio, and then select "External Microphone / iPhone Headset" it says

"Combination Output"

and since that is also the SPDIF input, maybe, just maybe, it will accept an incoming optical stream. I'm going to try this out this evening with my rMBP, Logic, and my Triton Extreme's SPDIF output and report back.

I can confirm that the new 15" mid-2015 rMBP does not accept an incoming SPDIF optical stream, but does output an optical stream through its combo output. It will, however, accept an analog microphone input from an iPhone headset style 4 contact plug device. Not that that is something you would use to record professional audio, though! LOL!

I am currently using my Apogee Duet FW with the Thunderbolt-to-Firewire 800 adaptor and everything seems to work exactly as it should. Apogee Digital has approved this adaptor for use with the Duet FW. However . . . I wonder about the power draw, because on the back of the Duet it states that it draws 600mA of current over a range of voltages (8-32, IIRC), and the Thunderbolt bus voltage is 15 volts. 15 volts times .6 amps is 9 watts, which is almost 30 percent over the adaptors 7 watts maximum power rating. I asked Apogee support about this but the person said they would need to kick this question upstairs to engineering and get back to me. So far no answer. I can tell you that the adaptor does get warm, but supposedly this is normal. Anyway, enough from me.
