wow, one person that has some knowledge of japan! thanks for the reply. i was thinking of getting it from yodobashi because i can get points from them and possibly student discount at the same time. if that's possible, perhaps i don't mind waiting...

Haha, I spend way too much time visiting Japan. I don't even live there and yet I have a whole bunch of Japanese points cards... their 10% points back scheme is awesome :D

I also live in Japan.

I have no actual experience with this, but my expectations regarding chances of Japanese Apple Stores having US keyboard-configured models in stock: pretty slim. If you are going to go in and order one, you might as well do it online at the Apple Store website, as the education discount is pretty sweet, and even easier to get than in the US ("You want education pricing? Click this button!").

I went with the base model + 16GB. Why? Because I have used my last computer for 6 years, and wouldn't mind getting another 6 years of use out of this one. $180 to take a big step towards futureproofing my laptop was a no-brainer.

256GB flash drive I will upgrade in a few years once prices go down, and until then I will get by with a $100 1TB USB3 external.

Hahah. So they don't check ID or anything? It's the same in Hong Kong too.

Is the edu discount higher than the points back from stores like Yodobashi though? I'm seeing a discount of HK$1500 off my HK$23k build, less than the 10 or 15% points back they offer in Japanese retail stores.

the points is going to be less than the 14,000 yen the student discount gives u from apple. the base model price with 5 percent points is about 9200 points/yen. unless u can get both points and student discount from yodobashi! do u guys know if that's possible??

u ordered it online right? how long did it say it will take before it ships to u? I just don't want to wait a few weeks :/ patience running out!!

I'm thinking also just to invest on a 64/128GB sdxc card and use it like an extra drive. that'll add onto the 256GB of the base model.

Ah so it's only 5% with computers... didn't know that. The percentage varies by type of device I guess. You'll have to ask regarding the student discount, I've never tried ordering a laptop through Yodobashi. The sales rep just told me that it was possible to order one through them when the new Airs came out and I wanted one with a US kb lol

I do know that the tax refund and points back cannot be combined though.

If you go the SD slot expansion route, you should know that Apple's SD card slots do not have a 'push-in-out' mechanism- they just sit there with the end several millimeters jutting out of the chassis so you can't use it like an internal drive.

I just came to bic camera and asked about the MBP. they have all the new models except the retinas. asked them (2,3 different person) when and they just said I don't know.

asked them about customizing the MBP thru them and they said it'll take 2,3 weeks to get to u.

ya the points is 5% bic or yodobashi. also asked the student discount and they said they don't regularly have it but u can try to negotiate with thr managers and they might give u one. lol.

so the memory sticks out a bit huh? if just a bit I'm ok with it. thx for the info.

Again, depending on what you do -> how many VMs are you running at the same time, how much RAM each needs, and what you are doing with them.

In Windows, 8GB of RAM allows me to run 3 VMs comfortably concurrently with 1 @ 2GB of RAM and other 2 at 1GB each. One of them is a server running Linux with Apache/MySQL and the other 2 are clients running Win XP.

Now, if I could do that in Windows, Apple and its might OS X can surely do better, right? :) Hence my comment about 8GB is enough for majority of the cases.. Having more of anything never hurts of course.

8GB vs 16Gb would have a negligible impact on boot camp. Parallels/VMware Fusion, it would definitely have a much bigger impact. How much, I can't really say, but I think it would definitely be noticeable.

Yeah, the wait time went up from 7-10 days to 2-3 weeks just a few hours ago. Maybe yodobashi can match the student discount easier?

The SD card actually sticks out quite a bit. Here's a photo so it's easier for you to understand...

Not something I'd keep inserted when putting it into a bag.

just checked apple store here in ginza, Tokyo store. they had the retinas this morning, people lined up supposedly and all sold out. they didn't even put it on display yet. no timetable when it will be in stock again. darnit!!

It really depends on what workload you intend to put on it, more than the length of time you plan to own it. For most average users, 4GB is more than enough, so they likely would never max out 8GB. Some say max it out now, since it's not that much more money, but it's up to you to decide what your needs are.

Tell that to my MBA 4GB. Webkit browsers such as Safari and Chrome will take 20-40 MB of Real ram for a web page that is less than 1MB. Can someone please explain this to me!!

ah I see. more than I thought. ah well. thx for showing!

after doing a little research, it seems like in japan apple store's, they do keep macs with us layout keyboards. of course not as much as japanese ones. found the info through some older mac rumor forum threads.

just putting this up just in case someone wants to know.

This is how it is whenever Apple releases a new product. Were you seriously expecting to be able to just walk in and pick one up?

I kind of assume it wouldn't be out today (japan's 12th of june). didn't know people would line up for the mac like they do with the iphone/ipad. i got an ipad, 2 iphone's, a few other apple things but just not a mac =/

usually when the store itself is out of stock/sold out, when will it get shipment again?

So you're concerned that your web browser is using 1% of your available RAM?

The RAM is non-user upgradeable, therefore buy as much memory as you can afford.

I'm concerned when I'm doing research with 30-40 web pages opens and safari or chrome is using 1.5-2GB of real memory.

When Flash keeps an already viewed video in real ram you have to close the tab/window and reopen it to get the ram back and continue reading the article.

I'm just stating that webkit and web browsers in general are becoming less efficient when a less than 100KB text only web page requires 30 MB of real memory.

Even a Mac mini with 4GB of RAM can handle that workload with ease.

I am really in the position with this thought. I really cannot decide whether to go with 8 or 16. I think the most intensive thing I do with my macbook is play Diablo or Guild Wars 2. Both of which only recommend 4GB of Ram.

Outside of this I use photoshop every now in them for very little and do website design. I had 8GB in my 2010 MacBook Pro, and it always worked great.

I have to order my MacBook online regardless of which I pick because of a friends employee discount but I am really stuck with which of these to go with.

Any advice?

I believe this item is blacked out right now for employee discounts, no?

If you do a lot of virtualization (I do), 16GB is huge. I often have an Ubuntu and a Windows VM open at the same time on my current 8GB MacBook Pro, and I eat up all the memory. I just ordered my new MacBook Pro with 16gb of memory, and I am STOKED!

this may be the only reason why I'll go for 16gb if/when I pull the trigger. I run win7 virtual window in VMWare Fusion, not through bootcamp, and think it'll use close to 4 gig max. So that leaves 4 for the Mac, which while still a bunch, would like more for some of the larger files I work on. But if I trip over a machine ready to go in an Apple store may just have to live with 8 :p

Just wonder if I order 16gb from online store, would I be able to return it within 14 days if there is issue? Ie any screen problems
