when i play games on my mbp ratina using 180p i always get a letterbox screen how can i make it be normal full screen?

i can not go higher because the game performance will suffer

Play at 1920 x 1200 instead of 1920 x 1080.

Your screen has a 16:10 aspect ratio, and 1080p is a 16:9 aspect ratio.

Use a 16:10 resolution like one of these:

1280x800

1440x900

1680x1050

1920x1200

2560x1600

2880x1800

The 17" MBP is the only known MBP to have the best gaming experience that I know of full screen no problem.

Nice. But how is that relevant to the OP's question? Any MBP can run anything full screen, as long as the aspect ratio is correct. Which in the OP's case it originally wasn't, but now is.
