Slow as a dog? honestly we still run an original iPad 32 Gb and it is not slow or unusable, in reality it runs better than most cheaper android tablets.
granted original mini is not a "speed demon" and it will not run as fast as new models but it will but if you turn of paralax and transparency it will run fast, if you like visual candy it will be slower.
also if you hold the tablet at 25 cm from your eys it will be retina :)
most of these efects and properties of device, such as retina, are marketing related anway.

For the extra $34 I'm going to play is safe and get the mini 2, even though I'll mostly just be using iBooks I'll have a few apps on it as well and would hate for them to stop working in less than a year when the original doesn't see iOS 9

The thing is, that $50 between the iPad mini 1 and 2 is probably the best $50 you can spend. That $50 gives you a retina display, a processor that's orders of magnitude faster, and guaranteed support for at least 2-3 years.

Why they didn't put at least an A6 in the iPad mini gen 1 boggles my mind.
