I just wanted to make a post about a recent experiment I did. I had a custom built Ryzen 5 1600X desktop with a GTX 970 as my primary PC and sold it to get out of debt last month. I was looking on Craigslist for a cheaper desktop that I could use as my primary PC and I found this, a Lenovo Thinkstation S30 with a 2.5Ghz 6C/12T Xeon 2640, 32GB DDR3 1600Mhz ECC,(4x8GB 4 free ram slots.) 128GB SSD, 1TB HD, GTX 750 ti. and Windows 10 Pro. The seller was asking $400 and I talked him down to $300 cash. I have been using this workstation as my primary desktop and for my use case have had very little in bottlenecks. I did notice some thermal bottlenecks so I replaced the thermalpaste on the CPU and added an intake fan to it and performance increased noticably. It works great for web, email, video converting, editing, medium gaming, multiple VMs, and the full Adobe suite. I never would have thought I would be able to take a Sandy Bridge Xeon and make it into my daily driver but it has fit the role very well. I feel the lack of a high frequency some days since this processor only goes upto 3Ghz but besides that it has been wonderful. I have decided to keep it and I'm going to put another GTX 970 in it thanks to the built in powersupply being 700W and having two 6pin GPU powerpins. If your looking for a budget pc I would totally recommend picking up an older workstation and using it. Also, I ran the serial number and this machine is still under warranty till 2018.
