Retrieve photos/texts from iPhone backup?

Without jail breaking. I know there are paid apps available but I'm looking for a free solution. I need to get stuff out of a past iPhone backup file.

This is a way to get your sms database out of a backup and put it in a new iphone setup. (mac only) worked for me.
