Retrieving mail from Library

Hello,
I backed up my laptop before it died, and now I'm wondering how to retrieve my emails from the library. I can see the Mail category under Library on my external drive, but I don't want to drag it onto my new computer for fear of losing my current mail or settings.
Anyone know what I can do? I need ONE email!!!
