It depends. 1–2GB graphics files probably won't be much different.

If you were doing music or video production, large graphics files, Photoshop etc., then I would recommend trading in.

Nonsense. There's nothing in the new machine that will cause it to have a longer life cycle than the old one. No T2 chip or other components that distinguish it from its older siblings. Newer CPU, that's all. It will be a few days newer otherwise.

I'm not saying don't trade it in. Yea... we all want the latest and greatest but I see no technically compelling reason for the OP to do so.

None.

Based on apples os support policy then there is potentially longer OS support, not that the machine may last longer.

Mini 2009 and 2010 both pretty similar yet 2009 supported till El Capitan and 2010 supported till high Sierra. Other then dropping support for the 2009 WiFi then no reason couldn’t run later os on the 2009 And other people developed patches to do so.
Also the 2009 iMac dropped despite no issues when installing Sierra on the iMac 2009 if patched to not block the install.

Mac Pro 2009 dropped before the 2010 in terms of os support yet if firmware flash a 4,1 to 5,1 then will run Mojave no problem is simply apple choosing to drop support for a model. Even a 2010 needed a gpu card replacement to get to install Mojave.

So isn’t nonsense that won’t potentially get a longer os support life cycle with the 2019 vs 2017 as isn’t necessarily based on the hardware but apple deciding if going to support in os the 2017 for the same length of time as the 2019.

I just bought the 27" 3.8 i5 two days ago.

This update does just seem like a small spec bump, but is it worth to return the "new" iMac for the newest 3.7 model with the 6-core i5 and different ram (2666MHz vs 2400MHz)? Even purchased 3rd party ram for the new machine so I am running 40GB. Would have to return those as well.

Other option would be to wait until next week to return my machine (currently working remotely and must have a working machine), upgrade to the 8-core i9, and wait the two weeks to receive it.

Why on earth would you not return it? I see no reason to not at least swap for the same level machine you have. Unless you got a smoking deal on that 2017, I would definitely return it. Even if you did get a deal, I would probably return it.

As for i9 vs i5, that is a tough call without knowing how that i9 performs. I will say, I suspect it does not perform $400 better.

Agree with the above - return it, even if for a same level machine.

Personally I would be tempted with the i9, but considering the previous i7 was enough to crank up the fans, Im doubtful the i9 would run any quieter, or better due to thermal constraints.

Yeah, that $400 feels like a steep up-charge. If it were $200 or so, I'd probably jump on board without question. Plus not knowing just how it will perform in the same enclosure form or if there will be any heat issues.

I am temped by the i9, but also in trying to stay within a budget, I'd rather put the excess into the ram right now and/or a future internal SSD drive. I'll probably end up making a clean swap with the 2017 i5 to the 2019 i5.
