I listen to music while I use my computer. The fan on my computer is going out (makes a sort of ‘crackling’ sound). On my new AirPod Max 2’s, I can hear it slightly in the noise cancellation mode while I can’t hear it on my old (original) AirPod Max.

This is shocking to me. I was so excited about getting better noise cancellation (for other sounds I haven’t yet tested for) but it seems (at least at this point) my old AirPod Max cancels noise I want to eliminate better. Do you think a firmware update might be coming? Could I be doing anything wrong? I don’t get it and I’m thinking of returning the new ones.

(Note: I do have very good hearing so it may not be obvious to others but I can definitely tell the difference. It is very frustrating)

ANC never cuts all noise out, and whilst the name is misleading, the technology isn’t able or designed to ‘cancel’ all noise. There will always be certain noises that come through.

It’s not really shocking, that’s an over the top reaction.

If you prefer the old ones, then return them - no big deal.

Thinking of returning mine due to the battery drain issue (useless when they are at 0% when I want to use them), and the fact that most of the time they are unable to correctly identify when they are on my head, and so half the features don't work. I'll give apple couple of days to get a firmware update out otherwise I'm making the most of the 14 day return window!

What are you actually adding here?

clearly more than you are! 😉

The original ones do cut that noise out so I'm not sure what you're on about here.

You're just avoiding the issue.

It's weird that you have that issue, but I admire your good hearing. I tried a pair of them in Best Buy the other day and I couldn't hear anything! I guess what you could try -- other than turning the music up -- is sitting further back from the computer or maybe "drown it out" with a fan or something else while you listen? That's what I would do. I'd hate to return such a good pair of headphones over a crackling fan. If all else fails, I guess you could just... repair the fan?
