Macbook Pro 2012 13"

My Return and shift keys don't work and there's nothing online that seems to fix the problem.

Tried the following, nothing has fixed it:

Restarted
Checked Accessibility as per the Apple site (nothing to do with sticky keys or text to speech, or anything like that)
Upgraded from Yosemite to El Capitan
PRAM and SMC resets
Picked off the keys to examine and see if there's anything blocking the action (there isn't)

The machine is only recently out of the Genius bar after the hard drive failed, and there are no appointments for over a week in London branches. I also can't *remotely* afford a hardware replacement or repair so I'm really, really desperate for a free fix for this if at all possible. Please help!

What you are describing sure sounds like a hardware problem. Unfortunately there is not anything people can do to fix hardware via the internet. :(

There is only 2 things I can suggest.
1) Contact the Apple Genius again and politely explain about the recent work they performed and now you are having problems with the keys.
2) Connect an external keyboard via wired USB. It's not free unless you already have one laying around, but it is a work around that would give you a working keyboard.
