Hi all, I managed to get an iPad2 at a local Target today using the great tracking threads here.

I got to the store & the sales guy informed me that it was an open box item. He popped it out of the box & I gave it a cursory look, mostly to make sure it was a legit iPad2 of the right variety & that the glass was intact. It's clearly a used iPad, it's got like 40GB of some chick's pictures on it.

I got home & discovered why it was returned (picture attached). I think it's pretty obvious that it was dropped on the corner and I'm a bit embarrassed I didn't catch it in the store. I could potentially tolerate the ding to the metal, but the glass separating is what concerns me.

Will an Apple Retail Store bother helping me with this, or should I attempt to work an exchange with Target? Has anyone had a similar experience?

Thanks!

Was this today, if so, What time did this happen?

I would go back as soon as possible to target and look for the sales guy that helped you the first time, then try to argue your case and have him back up your claim that it was a previously opened item.

I bought it a few hours ago (~7pm ET). I was hoping I'd just be able to exchange it at an Apple store instead of returning it to Target and dealing with the hassle of trying to find another one :/

Go back to Target, Apple does not cover accidents, nor will an Apple store swap it out for you. Target is the retailer that will have to deal with this. Worse case get your money back but taking a Target receipt to an Apple store is pointless. Apple stores are not "Applecare" centers, and considering this is clearly from a drop, they won't do anything but send you back to Target.

That ding is pretty obvious, you have to be blind, or you must have not really looked over it.

Now they probably will think you did it .

I hope you have good luck and they exchange it for you.

Yeah, I figured I'd have to deal with Target, but I was holding out a little hope that I could just deal with Apple. Thanks for the quick reply!

the only way that you can try and prove that this was not your fault at an Apple Store is to check when the iPad was originally registered (https://selfsolve.apple.com/agreementWarrantyDynamic.do) and show them your receipt from today, the dates won't match and you can try and argue your case that it was sold as an open box.

Yeah, it shows up as registered. Like i said, it's still got all the original owner's stuff on it --- a TON of pics (I gotta say, uncensored childbirth pics are not exactly what one expects to see in a family picture album  ), it's still logged into her Facebook account & shows browser history for the past few days.

Well like I said, I basically just made sure it was a 64GB WiFi and the glass wasn't shattered. I was so amped up about actually finding one, I didn't really "inspect" it as much as I guess I should have :/

Actually, Apple stores are AppleCare centers. It does not matter where you bought your Apple device, they will service it at an Apple store

Post some of those pics ASAP!

On a side note, I had a bad experience with something similar. I bought an HDTV antenna that appeared to be brand new but when I got home I opened the box and it was clearly used AND broken (the threads were stripped). I took it back and Target refused to refund my money. They brought up the fact that they couldn't be sure that I didn't do the damage. I was incredibly pissed. I raised a big fit and they still did nothing for me. I ended up disputing it with my bank.

I hope you don't run into a problem if you try and take it back.

I'm sorry but how did you miss that!?

I don't know... I guess it was covered with my hand when I picked it up & since I didnt inspect it edge-on from every edge I just didnt see it. It's not super noticeable when looking straight down on it :/
