Sorry to hear there was no real resolution to this. It's unfortunate that even going out of your way to do the right think netted you with an unusable phone.

Return IMEI blocked second hand phone to owner?

Yeah I got an ipad from this kid. And he and his mom gave me the stink eye while I proceed to check every detail, I could with no internet availability.
so after checking the serial to the box, and having everything line up. I took the leap and hand over the cash.
Then I proceeded to a fast food joint with wireless, and start checking things, and everything lined up, except, that it was still listed under their apple account, under my support profile. So needless to say, I was a little concerned, that one day it would come out stolen. I waited a week or 2, and no issues, Then I intended to try to contact the seller, and ask them to remove it from their account so I could put it on mine, and kept getting tied up until a couple of months had passed. I was reasonably sure it was ok, but I was always nervous until one day It just showed up on my own account. So I guess they finally removed, it, and either due to my previous attempts, or Itunes It updated and went on my account.
I got lucky, but I will check and do this somewhere I can really check it If I ever buy used again.
