return online iphone order to retail store and re-buy?

What are you trying to accomplish... using the correct lines upgrade? or the phone you have now has the wrong SIM....
You can just take out the SIM and put it in the new phone...
IF need be you can also call your phone company to swap the information around as well in case the phone is directly tied to the line..

Yes, but has anyone known Apple to make an exception if you are simply repurchasing that exact same physical phone (they won't have to send it back to any "factory" or anything this way because all you're trying to do, essentially, is switch it to a different line).
I wanted to exchange my 6 for a 6+, and I was told by Apple Online Store Customer Service that yes, you can return/exchange a phone you ordered online to a physical Apple Store. Dunno though if that's even possible with so few 6+s in stock. They did tell me that I might have to ask for a supervisor to get it done.

That refers to REFUNDS. EXCHANGES **MAY** be different.
IMO, you're best off calling your local Apple Store and asking this question.
The official answer is "no", but as you've seen, at least one manager in one store "bent" the rule for jtp098.
Every store is different. Who knows how your store will be, but hopefully they'll be willing to help out!
